Hi. I usually tow with a new Ford Ranger but there are times when it's not available I have two other options both only have a tow limit of 2000kg.

I would only be towing one large horse and I have an ifor Williams 511.

I know I need to calculate the weight of tack, water and other luggage but do you include any passengers?

I also have a weighbridge so can weigh everything as and when needed and have a ticket for it.

I realise I may be close to the limit so it may not work, but just looking for some advice please x

Similar to my situation. You include horse(s) plus any extras in the trailer, such as haynets etc. So a (guessing) 700kg horse, plus trailer @1000kg, + 10kg for a big net of soaked hay = total trailer load of 1710kg = well within legal limits of 2t.

I would happily tow the above with my 2t tow limit Skoda Octavia Scout. You must not go over the total train weight of your combination, though.

I really hope you are not putting passengers in the trailer !!!!!!!!!!!!
HB511 is 1000 empty so that leaves you 1000 for the horse and other stuff you are putting in the trailer

B+E licence needed

Yes, passengers in the trailer, horse in the front seat!isn't that how it's done?

So horse weighs 700 - 750kg, everything else goes in the car so I dont have to include that? So I am well within the weight limits then.

Yes I have B+E.

Car has its own separate weight limit as does the trailer

Officially shouldn't the Ifor 511 be downplated to 2t as it's standard gross capacity is 2.7t, which is above the tow limits of the non-Rangers?

THERE IS NO LAW OR RULE WHICH STATES THAT THE PLATED WEIGHT OF A TRAILER MUST BE WITHIN THE TOWING CAPACITY OF THE VEHICLE - PLENTY OF INTERNET MYTHS THOUGH !

This is a legal example

Vehicle
GVW 2100
GTW 4100
Towing capacity 2000

Trailer
MAM 2500
Empty 900

Max load for trailer 1100

Sorry to hijack but can anyone clarify whether I can tow under supervision and L plates. I've just bought a Kia Sorento 2.5 XE 2004 manual. Horse maximum 600kg. Would be towed in either a 510 or 511. I will be doing my b + e test next year after maternity leave and my instructor will also tow legally some trips out, but if I wanted to tow myself in the meantime am I legal to put L plates on and have my mum sat in as passenger (she passed many moons ago)?
