.....and you could only ask 5 questions - what would they be?!

Good question,

Do they have any vices?

What have they done for last X years?

Do they have passport?

Will they pass vetting?

What are their quirks?

why are you selling him?
what have they done, what have you done with him?
any history of ilness/lameness/old injuries?
what is the horse like to handle?
do you have records for this horse- passports, competition records- BE/BD/BSJA?

thats quite hard, i think the qeustions just depend on what the owners have told you and what you think of the horse!

It would depend on what you wanted to do with the horse. If for instance I was looking for a horse, I hack and hunt, so my questions would be.

How is he hacking alone and how is he in company?
When was his last bout of lameness or illness?
How long have you owned him?
How well does he jump?
Why are you selling him?

They always tell you why they are selling so would want to know but wouldn't need to use a question on it

What is your horses daily routine throughout the year?
Are they safe to hack alone and in groups?
What illnesses and injuries have they had?
How much schooling have they done?
What are their ground manners like?

Tell them what you want the horse for (from hacking to 3 day eventing...), what your experience is (in terms of riding and horsemanship), the conditions that you will be keeping it in (i.e. at home / livery etc.) The age of the child (if you are buying it for a child) BE HONEST !! and then if they still say that their horse / pony is the one for you - then go into the more detailed questions. But, maybe they will answer all those Ok on the 'phone too? So go and see it - ask more questions - look out for the signs that it may had been ridden prior to you coming......(i.e. nutcase....)
But the best question, especially for ponies is who would recommend it.....for instance the PC DC, other PC mums. In the case of horses for adults, Livery yard prop. others in a Riding Club, Judges from competions etc.
Word of mouth is by far the best recommendation.

I dont tend to ask why they're selling as TBH they could make up anything! If the horse is insane and they hate it, they're hardly going to tell you that!

I tend to do what devonlass1 says - Id tell THEM what Id want the horse for etc. and see if they think it suits. Otherwise, Id ask them about its competition history (and see proof), any visits from the vet and what for, any vices, any problems at all (such as rearing/bucking or not loading etc.).
