Cleaned your tack properly ?
I mean totally dismantled stitching checked ,cleaned and then oiled ?
I know a lot of people don't use oil on their tack because it rots the stitching eventually.
I usually give mine a quick wipe over using 'soap' spray and it is presentable but today I decided it needing doing properly.
My saddle is old and I was properly shocked at how much oil got sucked in.I hadn't realised how 'dry' the leather had become. Hopefully my saddle will give me a few more years.

Pointless post really.I tried to explain to OH about the oil but he just doesn't understand these things:confused: If it was something to do with a golf ball that would be different:D
 
I sit in front of the TV once a month and do the whole lot, bridles, headcollars, breastplates and saddles :)

(I never use oil though - only grease based products, pref 100% natural)
 
I don't oil mine but I always take my bridles apart when I clean them. I clean them about twice a month, more if I am competing. Haven't cleaned my saddles since October though! :o
 
I am REALLY anal about my tack - it gets wiped down with water, soaped, and covered in Horseman's Onestep every time it's used, and once a week it all gets taken apart, scrubbed, oiled, soaped, and slathered in leather balsam...

cleaning tack is quite possibly my favourite thing in the world!
 
Another tack cleaning anorak here! I make my own so am extra super anal about cleaning it and keeping it perfect. Each time it is cleaned (very regularly!) it is a full take apart job. No soap left around buckles/holes etc. Every so often I polish up the metal too. Everything done with proper glycerin soap and then greased. I prefer not to use oil (decent leather, regularly cleaned, that hasn't been soaked in the rain shouldn't need it) and I don't like the spray type cleaners, I find they dry my tack.
I just love tack cleaning, I still have a childlike glee at cleaning my very own leather tack - comes from having to beg and borrow rides and then helping to clean their tack - just so much more exciting cleaning my very own!! (it's ok, I know just how sad I am!).

:eek: Our saddler told off a fellow livery of mine, who was like this about cleaning tack (correction, she wasn't as avid as you!). Said it had ruined her saddle, and to cut down to only cleaning her saddle once a week because the leather over the stuffed pads were getting so soft that the padding was moving and changing shape :eek:

I have always used this as an excuse to clean tack not very often at all :D must say I've never had tack go dry and crackly or overly worn doing this.
 
I cannot remember the last time my everyday bridle was cleaned :eek:

My competition bridles are cleaned thoroughly everytime they are used (inc oiled if they look like they need a "drink", I never keep my bridles long enough for the oil to affect the stitiching :o ) and wiped over and soaped before use.

My saddles are synthetic so minimal cleaning required :)
 
In the winter my tack gets thoroughly cleaned after each time I go hunting (although I don't oil it every time).

Haven't been hunting since mid-november, so it hasn't been cleaned since.

Possibly, hopefully, going tomorrow though................
