We have a lot of oak trees on our land and have noticed that after 2yrs of no acorns, this year the trees are heavy with huge green acorns!

On our old place the yard owner put electric tape around the perimeter of the two oaks and raked the acorns up, but im not sure when they're due to fall and need to go get extra tape.

Any idea when this is likely to happen ?

Another month, and when the first autumn winds come to knock them down. However, horses can reach up and get them off the lower branches of the tree, so I would be taping off sooner rather than later if you have an acorn addict.

We have some magnificent oaks and in the heat of this summer the horses have been using the shade a lot.

Another tip, if viable, is to spread a thick layer of muck over the fallen acorns.

When everything else falls off, as in I think it is part of the great Autumn "fall".

I'm sure someone who actually knows will be along soon.

Until then, my TB mare got a real taste for them at the old livery place so do be careful and keep an eye out for the early few that fall. Tape is good but make it a wide perimeter. If my mare so much as sniffs them now she swells up like a football and so she is no longer allowed anywhere near any Oak trees.

Thanks, wasnt sure as the oaks are the last to shed their leaves but the acorns look so hesvy already! My standie is always going up on his hinds to chew on willow leaves but never seen him do so with the oaks - better safe than sorry as they say!

Timely reminder to all

I had a lot of Acorns falling with a bit of a breeze on Sat & TF was so happy, till I removed her from that paddock...

Please all, do keep an eye on the acorns, any breeze now will get them thundering down in their multitude - and by heck we do have a huge bumper crop this year!

My top paddock, unused for the past 2 months has already got a thick covering of acorns under the massive tree up there :(

We don't have any acorns again this, I think this is the 3rd year running sans acorn...good for the time being but I'm not looking forward to a bumper crop!

I fenced my oak trees off a couple of weeks ago, there are acorns on the ground now. Unfortunately it looks like a bumper crop!

we will put my our pig on ours to clear them ! husband is very happy as he finally has a use ( is husbands pig , my horse )!

What are everyone's top tips for clearing them up.

Wish I had pigs!
I shovel them up & bag up, so my neighbour can take them to a couple of local friendly pigs :) ....... having got oaks on the boundaries of 6 paddocks (of 8) its an annual nuisance.....
Also cleared out the yard drains & gutters yesterday, just in case things sluice down more soon than predicted............
