Right now it doesn't feel like it will ever end! I've considered giving up horses this winter, totally fed up as we all are, it's been absolutely pouring again tonight.
Busted my hump in the sheeting rain today (and a bit of hail too!) to clear up the hardstanding and horseproof it. Ended up thumping some posts into the edges, which was lovely and easy thanks to the sodden ground.
Ponies were very excited to come onto it and eat the scant amount of grass that has grown up through the base. I'll probably have their next bale of hay delivered onto the hardstanding, makes more sense than having them stood in the mud to eat.
Mine are still out during the day. In at night. Usually live out 24/7. Despite ab lib hay in the drier parts of the fields, they are attacking the fencing like beavers. Whole section of rails will need to be replaced. They are craving grass. And are bored. Haven’t ridden for three weeks. Mucking out four. And filling haynets etc for the evening then going to work as a cleaner has buggered my back. By the weekend, I’m too shattered to hack out and it’s usually peeing with rain. Lost all motivation too. It’s been awful this past month. Luckily one is retired. One a baby. But the other two have gone from being ridden every day to nothing. Out in a mud bath field. Then in stable at night.
Judging by the collection of poo on it, the hard standing has been very much appreciated, makes the effort (and resulting fatigue, fibro ) worth it! Nice for me too, as I can call them over onto it, feed and check them, and give them some love, all without stepping into any mud! Result!
Our fields are pretty saturated but they’re still turned out all day with hay and aren’t desperate to come in. I’ve managed three mornings of dry rides in a row although it’s rained heavily in between especially at night.
