.... stop rugging in the day?

when i'm comfortable out there in a T-shirt, so, when there's some proper warmth in the sun's rays.

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)?

on the first good dry day when the fields are slightly sticky enough to be affected by my roller... the big fields have been rested and don't need it, the little paddocks do!

Stop bringing in at night?

Umm, when the weather's really nice and i have lots of grass in the fields.

Wean off hard feed for summer?

never, mine get fed 2x daily all year round, amounts will change to take grass into account though...

Stop putting out haylage?

as soon as there's enough grass and they're leaving the hay. the one on restricted grass will have hay all summer too, probably.

If you want a date then I think you might be waiting a long time....

All these questions are dependent on one thing .... the weather.

If we had a reliable long range weather forecast then I could give you a date but I would expect if I need to hazard a guess it would be around about Easter for all of the above.... However, if any of you remember the weather for Badminton HT last year (first week May) then we might be looking more at the middle of May!

1, Depending on weather about may time.
2, April or when ground is a bit dryer but not too dry!
3, all ours are in at night but some live out from april until sep.
4, have hard feed all year round
5, Go onto summer grazing so when grass runs out

Stop putting out haylage?

1) our yo does this, so in that case prob never!!

2) when the fields are drier and we have stopped having overnight frosts.

3) they aren't on hard feed, so they will continue with the same handful of chaff and supps year round. Brewers yeast and magnesium is slowly being increased atm though for the midges and sugary spring grass.

4) no haylage at all, but no hay is going out now unless there is a frost in the morning. The grass is growing now so they have more than enough to eat. If it stops growing again if we have a cold spell then hay will go back out again.

1. When its warm enough
2. YO does this early May
3. We can turn out 24/7 first week in May
4. All of mine are fed hard feed 12 months of the year but much smaller rations in the summer
5. We stop giving haylage when they are turned out 24/7 in May as thats when we change fields for the summer

1 – When its warm enough

2 – Fields are normally rolled and fertilized in may/june time if needed.

3 – I won’t be this year – Holly will continue to come in at night all year to keep on track with her weight.

4 - Holly would like to know what hard feed is LOL – She gets none!

5 – We don’t put haylage out at all in the winter unless we have any living out 24/7… There is plenty of grass in the field to keep their jaws occupied! There is 12 horses on just over 17acres of well maintained grazing with good drainage in my mares field! There is also tasty hedgegrows around the fencelines to nom on!

.... stop rugging in the day? Depends on the weather/temps. +6C rain, and melting at this moment, -14C forecast for this pm:eek: Usually rugs stay on until end of March/April

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)? Harrow, just as soon as it thaws enough to break up the muck. The snow is melting and my fields look like muck heaps today:( More snow forecast this week though, so no harrowing yet. anyway, last time I looked my harrow was at the bottom of a 5' snow drift

Stop bringing in at night? Live out thankfully.

Wean off hard feed for summer?

Stop putting out haylage?
I feed hay for at least 9 months of the year, my grass won't even start coming through until end of April

.... stop rugging in the day? Weather dependent. Usually April-ish.

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)? Depends on when the Estate Manager decides it my fields' turn to be done.

Stop bringing in at night? N/A. They live out 24/7/365

Wean off hard feed for summer? Don't use hard feed except for 30 year old Reine who is fed Speedibeet mush all year round.

Stop putting out haylage? Have been lucky this winter with just my 4 horses on 30+ acres, still got plenty of grass, (2/3 of the land still ungrazed!) so stopped feeding haylage when I finished the last big bale after the snow (early January).

.... stop rugging in the day? Already have, apart from if there is a wind or rain which is when I have put a sheet on. Min temp here is 10 degrees at the moment and when the sun is shining, its just lovely!

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)? She is in the same field all year.

Stop bringing in at night? Probably end of March when the night temperature is around 10 degrees.

Wean off hard feed for summer? Once she starts living out.

Stop putting out haylage? Already have. Stopped end of Jan. The grass is beginning to come through and she is at a good weight.

stop rugging in the day?
Probably next month if we get some nice weather

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)?
March/April

Stop bringing in at night?
Middle of March

Wean off hard feed for summer?
None of mine are on hard feed anyway - just a balancer which they are fed all year round

Stop putting out haylage?
When the grass has had a chance to grow for a bit, so probably about the middle of March

:)

Stop putting out haylage?

They've had the odd day without them, but most likely they wont be without permanently till May has arrived (lots of on & off days till then tho, with the odd 'sod it' days too :D )

As soon as its dry enough to do so next month onwards

They've already had almost a week out last week - and 'when' it drys up more they will be out in the shelter paddock again overnight instead of stabled at night.

Prob wont wean off completely - one is a dieter so its good practice (for me) to feed 2 x day when moving from one diet patch to another. Also means they are checked close up 2 x a day, rather than an 'inspection form the gate' when/if I have to leave a friend in charge for a couple of days

I've already stopped 'proper' daytime hay on my non-work days - and they wont get it again for another fortnight or so (unless it freezes over/snows etc again) but have slightly increased night hay. They get a small bit each in the morning to make them happy, but there is sufficient grass to nibble on in the new current paddock.

.... stop rugging in the day? Four of six are unrugged already, the oldies still have lightweights on but have had a couple of days without when it has been sunny'

Roll/Harrow your winter field(s)? When it is dry enough not to do damage, harrowing probably in the next week or two, rolling in a month or so hopefully)

Stop bringing in at night? Most are out already.

Wean off hard feed for summer? Only the oldest ones have hard feed as in cereal, they will continue through the summer if they need it.

Stop putting out haylage?
when there's enough grass.
