When would you geld?

Just after a bit of advice. So, as lovely as Percy is he’s not stallion material nor did I breed him for that purpose so his goolies will be coming off. It’s just went to do it. There’s so many different schools of thought, and I realise that I’m just going to open myself for some more opinions here.

Having done some thinking it seems a good time to do it just before they are weaned, the wound will be small and he’s got mum for comfort but does the whole testosterone playing a part into development come into it?

I will also ask what the vet thinks when they come to do his passport and microchip

Pros and cons.
I did mine at 5 months in the autumn and weaned at 6 months. He barely noticed. But he was barned over winter with fillies

I did my ISH at 20 months - he was out with my gelding so I waited until he was big and strong and started to show a little interest in the mares over the fence. (he did have one retained testicle, so we were hoping it would drop and didn't rush, and it did become accessible with standing sedation thankfully).

I would do it as soon as it is practical and safe to do so. As long as he is in good health, his testicles have both descended and he won't be bothered by flies, there's no reason to wait imo.

As soon as both are present they recover much quicker if done sooner than later but it is up to you and the vet

I had my boy done at 8months. The vet wanted to wait until just before he was 1 (born April) but I was on a mixed yard and didn’t want a Randy Welsh colt that was already starting to nip and get toothy so they came off when he was 8months and he’s none the wiser really. He’s already standing at 15hh at three and he’s not weedy, always had a big frame he just hasn’t ended up with the stallion neck

Mine was done in the autumn and bounced back in a day. I was in no rush to wean though.
A friend has just had her very colty arab done and she struggled to find a vet that would this time of year, because of the flies.

I usually had mine done around Easter so they were coming up to 1 yr. Had one done just before weaning as he was getting bolshy. Only problem was that his testicles were tiny. I had to hold onto them for the vet to stop them disappearing, they were very slippery.

Mine were always done later than I wanted as they were bred to be stallions bar 1 so Dartmoor was 24 months he was never going to be a stallion but was shown in hand youngstock as a colt got to be an even worse pain in the but so was promptly gelded, the others were to be stallions if they were quality enough with good temperaments but one was cryptorchid, one didn't have the temperament and one was sold at weaning all my other foals have been fillies
Wouldn't run on a colt again so now would be done asap even a few weeks if a vet was willing

Thanks everyone. I will definitely be getting him done before he’s weaned I think. Will book him in for passporting and speak to the vet then.
