When you bought your first horse...

So the best piece of advice I can give is don't buy from a dealer but from a private seller who knows the history of the horse. /QUOTE]

Trust me......private sellers are not all sweetness and light!
I bought my new horse from a private seller who fed me a load of lies about my horse, luckily i am a relatively experienced rider and am actually enjoying the challenge of him!.....but for a novice.....it would have probably put them off for life!

My first is Darcy, my 16hh IDXTB horse 12 going on 2, and owned for 2 years tomorrow.

I tried 9 horses and he was by far the BEST on trial, schooled quietly, jumped quietly, hacked alone in walk/trot/ canter without fault. The owner let us have him on a 2 week trial and let us pick him up/ take him ourself so she was infact very genuine.

2 weeks went past blissfully, and so I bought him. 2 weeks + 1 day, no word of a lie he began to show his true colours. He rears vertically on quite a regular basis, will kick/buck if you 'dare,' to tap him with a whip, is difficult to jump, used to be a nappy swine, is pretty awful to load , spooks at his own shadow (literally) and has perfected the drop shoulder and bolt technique well. He also can do a pretty mean rear-into-leap sequence. He's also almost killed himself on multiple occasions ;)

But, he's my buddy and I wouldn't swap him for the world. Its been 2 years without an awful lot of progress but we've been having a ball on the most part and I look forward to seeing what he's got to give. I know its in there, it's just lurking :)

Oh no! I just have not got the confidence and class myself as a novice - although I have been riding on and off for the last 29 years! I just couldn't cope with a lunatic or a challange I wanted a quiet life - it would have put me off - I'll not know if this boy is going to be okay for me for a few months yet - I was ****ing myself first time I road him at home!

My first "horse" (as opposed to ponies) I shouldn't have bought. He had the most fantastic nature, I loved that horse to pieces but only because he was so cuddly on the ground. To ride, he didn't have the attitude for jumping at all (and that's what I do). Found out later he'd been beaten up as a youngster in the SJ ring many a time so no wonder he'd given up :( Had him 5 years, he'd jump anything at any height in lessons or at home but put him in a competition environment and he threw in the towel (often we wouldn't get over the first fence...). I eventually had to admit defeat and sold him to a hacking home which suits him totally. I then got my current horse who SHOULD have been my first horse - he's fantastic.

my parents bought me my first horse last year in april, he was 5 years old but acted much beyond his year, he was perfect when we arrived and was perfect up until he died in novemer, i would never have changed a thing about him.

Yes , you learn by your mistakes bought a schoolmaster 14 .y.o. from a private seller who turned into everything you do not look for in a horse rearing up and over, hated people the lot .I only rode him twice ,at home due to rearing when trying to ride , luckily i had help with a good friend who sorted him out , he still reared but calmed down a bit she bought him, i did take a big hit though on the price .He still rears ! I was just glad to end the situation happily .
I then bought a newly broken <!> horse and im so pleased even though every one said it would end in tears , i bought him from a dealer and would have paid more than i did for him, people have been opinionated about him, two novices together , but they are backing off now ,over a year now so there you go-
bought off a private seller-alleged schoolmaster-ripped off -
bought off a dealer-newly broken tbx who has been fab-dealer even let me have a trial loan too <was a friend of a friend >
So every one was happy, apparently dealer couldnt get rid of my current horse ,strange isnt it ?
