When you buy a horse do you expect tack to be included??? *Rant potential!*

The only thing I expect - unless specifically mentioned in an advert - is the legally required headcollar and leadrope. Infact, I would rather NOT have any tack included, unless it was free!!

Unless it was mentioned in the advert as £???? including tack, I would assume that tack was available by separate negotiation or not at all.

When I bought Jack I was offered his saddle for about £250 I think, however it was a synthetic which I don't particularly like so I decided if I was spending money I'd rather have a leather one. I did have all his rugs and travel boots etc for £100 as his old owner was giving up.

I think it's extremely cheeky of the buyers though, to just assume that tack was included!

I wouldn't assume - I was rather chuffed that my project turned up with his own headcollar and a stable rug tbh. My other tb came with nothing I had to borrow a bridle to walk him to our yard and started from scratch as he was a very different shape from anything I have had before - and like some one has said thats part of getting a new horse buying the new stuff!!

The buyers are trying it on.
Unless stated, then don't expect tack.
1 out of the 3 I've bought came with tack and of the 3 I sold they all went with tack, only because first pony was tiny so tack wouldn't fit second pony, then when we sold G his stuff went with him as Prince had plenty and when Prince went everything went, only because he was 13hh so his stuff wouldn't fit a 16.3!

After all that what I meant to put is no you shouldn't expect tack, it's an added bonus if you get it, but tack or no tack shouldn't put you off a horse!

Is headcollar and leadrope legally required, or is it a joke?
(sorry for sounding dim)

I have given up actively trying to sell the mare, so sick of complete timewasters and joyriders. I'm aiming to qualify her for the grassroots champs at badders next year!!!
Is this the bay may you've posted pics of? She'd gorgeous, if you qualify for Badminton and bring her down to south glos be careful, I might come and steal her!

Barmy! Personally I wouldn't want tack included- I'm very picky about what brands/types I will and won't use and I wouldn't want the hassle of getting rid of the old stuff!

None of the horses we've bought in recent years have come with tack and we didn't expect them to.

I've sold kids ponies with tack- synthetic saddles and the ponies bridles complete with little snaffles, but I don't sell bigger horses with tack!

And certainly, I take my own headcollars and bandages to collect them too.

I have occasionally sold a saddle with a horse if they offered extra for it etc. but not my nice ones, and not my bridles, and NEVER my rugs!!

No not at all, when searching I never expect that the horse would come with tack, unless stated, the fact that my little cherub came with tack was an added bonus!!! :D

I would not expect tack unless the ad said tack included - I actually prefer to buy without tack as often the tack is of poor quality or does not fit, and there are certain brands of saddles that I like as well.

I did negociate and got head collar lead rope and travel kit for my pony though.

Haven't read the replies :o

I've bought three neds that came with tack - none of the saddles fitted properly!

If the ad says tack included, then yes, it's included. If there is no mention of it, I assume it isn't included. If I want to negotiate on the price, I might try and get it thrown in with the horse, but unless it was very good (for horse and me), I'd probably sell it on (or litter the tack room with it lol).

yor not being unreasonable whatsoever, both the horses ive bout both came with their tack but i paid extra for the tack as i only saw fit - and i only bought them because one was absolutly just WOW haha and the other one because i paid £5o extra for a wintec saddle that i use a lot :) x

I'd never expect tack to come with a horse unless the advert explicitly said so! As another poster said, maybe they were all novice horse owners, especially with the market you're aiming at...

I think tack is included with a lot of ponies, well it used to be many years ago when i was riding ponies, but i guess with horses people keep the tack in hope that it fits next horse they buy.
It would be nice if tack was included of course, but i wouldn't expect it. :)

My tb came with everything right down to grooming kit and feed bins and about a dozen rugs because his owner was giving up. My mare on the otherhand was completely naked, not even a headcollar (and she needed new shoes), but in both cases the price reflected this.

Like most others, I assume no tack is included unless they state it in the advert. I have sold horses with tack before (if its been made for the particular horse). Some people are quite ridiculous with their assumptions / expectations!

When I'm buying I don't expect anything to come with the horse at all, and tbh I'd rather chose my own saddle and I have enough tack and rugs already I don't want any more! My sister's pony came with tack and a rug, but the saddle was 18inch (on a 14.2 ;)) and the rug was 2 sizes too small.

When selling I'm always suprised how obsessed people are about the tack and rugs being included in the price. I sold a pony for £250 more because the woman was depserate to have the bridle (£50ish), bit (£50) and rug (£60), madness. If people are that fussed about having tack I'm quite happy to dig out an old bridle and a decent rug of the right size, as I can usually replace them with new ones for less money than I'm gaining.

My friend recently sold her event-type mare which was advertised for £5750. The mare was being ridden in a nearly new prestige event saddle which she explained was not for sale as she needed it for her other horses. The purchasers tried offering £5000 including the saddle! The saddle cost £1500 so they were effectively offering £3500 for the horse .

Along with everyone else I wouldn't expect tack, although if I was buying I might "negotiate" a bit and ask about bridle/rugs, etc. but wouldn't want really want a saddle unless it was specially for that horse, and even then I would get it checked out by my fitter.

I thought it was a legal requirement that a horse is sold with a halter or something to lead it with!

No. Never. Unless stated. Buyer is very definitely new to all this or just trying it on.

My boy came with a headcollar and a lightweight rug. The headcollar was diamante (sp?) studded. That's gotta be worse than a badly fitting saddle. Especially when I heard the rumour she may or may not have hit him with it cos he wouldn't put it on. Ouch.
