Hey guys,

when you buy a saddle online - ebay or privately - how do you sort out payment if it is too far to travel? I have purchaced one on ebay and was going to pick it up when I come back from cornwall at the end of the month, but the seller - understandably - wants payment earlier as she needs the money to buy a new youngster. So - the dilemma is how have you paid? Have you done a cheque? But then how do you know they will send the item? I guess I've always liked the security of paypal, but the fees are high and I totally understand why she wants to avoid...

Any suggestions appreciated!!

Personally I would tell the seller that you will pay by paypal (so that you are protected) or you will pay by cash when you return from Cornwall at the end of the month.

I'm not quite sure where you stand from Ebay's POV with regards to protection of your money / purchased goods if you have paid by cheque. I can't imagine they are going to give you money back for a cheque if the seller doesn't send the goods - they wouldn't have the ability to intervene like they can through Paypal.

Yes - the charges can be high using Paypal - but then the seller knew that when the saddle was listed. Incidentally - the charges on paypal aren't any more expensive than if the seller was using a credit card machine.

Hmm tricky let me tell you a horror story. I was watching a saddle I really wanted on ebay it was unusual so was stalking it. Buy it now was too high and I emailed seller with offer. She was bit slow but as was her first item on ebay kind of understood. By the time she had accepted my offer the listing had run out so we did it outside ebay. Now this person was a fairly well know para dressage rider so again thought was safe. Offered cheque or paypal and did paypal with lots of fuss. Que no saddle. Emailed and emailed. Took days for her to reply and I got amazing answers such as I'm a bit busy ill send it when I can, its at my aunts house and I ve got no car for a few weeks. Was distraught as was all money I had for my saddle. I ended up stalking her to the nationals and was all for a fight when my dad called to say it had arrived at his house and he had never seen packaging like it. Still don't know how it survived. This all took about 8 weeks. I was starting up paypal disputes and everything. Sorry that was boring but my advice would be to go there however far and swap money for saddle. End of. Honestly it was dreadful and I would never trust anyone again!!

if Paypal was offered in the auction tell her you will be paying with that- she shouldn't offer Paypal if she doesn't want to pay the fees.

Pay by paypal, it doesn't cost you it costs her and you are covered for any problems.
Also was it pick up only? If not get her to post it as soon as you have paid. :)

As someone who has sold saddles on ebay, I have always insisted on Paypal at the end of the auction.

I don't want someone changing their mind and not turning up to pick up.

I sell on there knowing what the fees are, it doesn't bother me.

Think it is going to be paypal. Even though she said in her listing she would 'prefer cash' it was still an option and I am well within my rights to use it arent I? No, it is not collection only. P&P is fully insured at £40....

Sorry I needed to vent my paypal saddle horror story. If she has said paypal then do that. I would under no circumstances send a cheque. I'm sure I would have got my money back through paypal eventually they tend to come down on the side of the buyer but it was just such a nightmare beforehand. I also didn't go though ebay so that was another thing against me but lesson learnt. Pay by paypal and ask her to let you know when she will and has posted it etc.

what ever the agreed term was on her selling page, if it was pick up as you said then she has the right to cancel your bid and resale it. i always go by paypal, hmn tough one. trust or not to trust that is the question, how much was it? if it was expensive then i would leave it and tell he only through paypal, if you want to take the chance get a bankers draft. but if you can get over for a month, she could have cleared it and leave you with nothing. talk to her again. wish you luck hope it works ouit, phone your bank and ask is there a way if you give her money now if she doesnt follow through with it can they do something about it.

I buy and sell on ebay - you HAVE to offer paypal nowadays - in the past you didn't need to but they have changed the rules so that you HAVE to offer it. I now restrict my buying to cheap items or stuff that I can do cash on collection for - I also offer cash on collection for all selling items - Paypal can be a nightmare but it's one of the 'joys' of ebay.
