My lucky sod of a horse has all variations of rug. I tend to layer m/ws and l/ws until the cold really sets in, and then I wack the h/w on! I think alot of people rug up too soon, seeing as often the coldest months of the year are feb into march.

Actually, what is a medium weight to say....a TB is probably a heavyweight to a WB! It really does depend on your horse. Each horse is different and go with what your horse is comfortable in. My WB is fully clipped and because it is mild at present is in a 280g fill rug. Horses for courses!!!!x

Ponio is currently fully clipped and is wearing a 70g premier equine rug with no neck in the day and in the stable at night, but he is a warm horse by nature and would roast in anything thicker at the moment.

I think you just have to play it by ear. Harry is naturally a hot body and after his first clip he was still just in LW night and day. Then last weekend (I think) it suddenly turned cold - I went to the yard in the morning and his ears were really quite chilly (I think ears are a good indicator), so I whipped on his MW for the next few nights.

Then Saturday morning weather seemed to change and he was a little too toasty under that MW, so he's back in the LW again.

As a rule of thumb I work on: ok to be a little under-rugged outside - he can always run around to keep warm - with the opposite being true for when he's stabled.

linx currently has just a rainsheet combo on in the field & a 150g standard neck stable rug over night as the next turnout weight i have is 170g which is a bit much for the moment however when we had the cold(ish) spell a week or so ago he wore a waffle rug under turnout

Frankie is getting fully clipped this weekend (god knows why, it he was my horse hes be in a blanket or high trace clip, but hey ho hes not mine so.....) and hell be living in a MW stable rug and a HW or MW turnout with hood, depending on weather.

if it gets really cold he'll have an under blanket with a neck on as well as his stable rug xx

Depends on horse and it's noraml temp - mare is in MW T/O and light to middleweight stable.

Gelding who runs chillier than her is in HW T/O withoutneck and M/W stable with a waffle underneath no neck - try to keep neck rugs off him as long as possible as his mane rubs on them all

Variety of rugs! My 2 have hunter clips and live out 24/7. Right now, my TB x is in a Rambo Duo (with the liner and neck cover attached). Whereas my Welsh D (who is generally a hot horse) is in a WB Orican (no neck). When the winter gets worse the Welsh will have a neck attachment put on, and the TB x might get another thinner rug underneath - dont know how cosy he'll be in the Rambo as it's still rather new! They have a selection of stable rugs for standing about at shows - mainly use a standard neck FAL Godolphin or my Rhinegold Kentucky full neck.

jay got a full clip last night, he has a wollen day rug on with a 300g combo on during the day & will go up to a 400g at night in the stable this week as the temp is due to drop

I seem to be putting different rugs on every day, the weather is so variable that one night he's been in a Thermocell combo then a couple of days later needed a HW over the top of it! In the day I haven't had him in anything heavier than a 170g turnout plus neck cover but some days I've gone back to a rainsheet.
