I have thought a few times in the last week I was going to say goodbye to my 16 year old whippet x grey, cos she had a very wobbly on back legs day 2 days ago.....next day she was fine, even though I was convinced I would be taking her into work with me and not returning her/not me

She has done her usual walk round the nature reserve tonight at her usual snail speed but is fine on the old legs

NOW
My 16 year old cat I have had since she was born has refused her food tonight and the tuna I have given to tempt her
frown.gif
and her coat look ruffled, so now my paranoia has switched to her and tomorrow she will make the trip to work if she has not perked up, Im hoping maybe a dental or a flush of the old kidneys and she will be right as rain...but Im airing on the side of wishful thinking(I know she is not right)

It's lovely to have animals to such an age, but very stressful on the other hand

I know Im rambling

I remember being like this when our old boy Oscar was in his last yr he went blind gradually from the age of 14 and we think this made him go dottled to, then he started losing weight, my mum became in a bit of denial about him i eventually had to tell her to take him to be pts she knew it really but just couldnt bare to not have him around anymore, it was as you say lovely to have him from a pup to 15yrs old but very sad at the same time knowing that perhaps you didnt have much longer with him.
i hope your wee cat will be ok our old girl is 15 with an overactive thyroid - nightmare to keep her in food and she's pretty thin but ok and happy just now the main thing. take care good luck x

It's so crap........suppose one way to look at it, is they have have a full life, better than loosing a young dog/cat suddenly, I don't usually ramble on like this...prob cos I found an old rescue dead curled up in his bed yesterday in the cattery.....I tried to rehome the frigger but he would never stay in a new home, always caused some kind of trouble to be returned
grin.gif
grin.gif
........he was one of my origiaonl RSPCA cats and when I stopped working for them a good 10 year back he was about 5 then, so he must have been round about 15......... I would not return the animals I had belonging them(self explanatory really

I only have one origional cattery cat now, from way back when as I dont deal with cats often.

Thanx for vibes for mitty, she is my own so obs not nice to see her down...hopefully she will be ok, and everyone elses older animals who have been a little off lately

absoloutely. we're in a dilemna with ours 15yr old as having almost decided it was time to go she has promptly perked up... go figure!!

I know just what you mean Cayla, with most of my oldies I seemed to spend half my time worrying about them and thinking "this is it" and then they bounced back a few hours later. I hope your cat soon picks up, I think the cats are the worst for being drama queens, they only have to feel slightly unwell and the "take to their beds".

Sorry your kitty isn't well. Hopefully she'll perk up. We'll send some good healing vibes anyway...

I too worry about my oldies. My old girl I had PTS a couple of years ago I CONSTANTLY worried about. She was blind had no teeth and became incontinent due to a bladder tumour. As she was a very clean dog by nature, she'd go out via the cat flap and spend ages trying to wee and it' never happen, til she went to sleep and her bladder would just leak. So she'd spend the day soaked in her own wee or out trying to empty her bladder. So before winter for her sake and my constantly worried sick state, I chose to euthanise her at age 13.

On the other hand, my now oldest dog is even older than Murphy was - and last year I thought I was losing her as she took a spell which I thought she had had a stroke. Turns out she slipped a disk which was making her walk sideways with a head tilt - pinched nerve. She's since been put on NAF Relief to help ease the arthritis in her stifle and she's right as rain, bouncier than ever at 14. But there are certainly days that I worry about her and can't stop thinking she just doesn't look right or that she's not interacting. But I have to remind myself that she's an old lady and just wants to catch up on her beauty sleep.

It's hell isn't it! Indie is ok one day, eating like a horse and hooning round the field , then not eating and yelping when she gets up the next. I watch her eat like a hawk, poke and prod her all the time, wrap her in a blanket at night so her hips stay warm, put eggs, cheese, sardines or salmon on her food to make her eat but I know the inevitable is coming. It's very sad but I know she's had the best 2 years of her life with me so when the time comes I'll try and console myself with that

I'm glad you posted this as I am going through the same thing at the moment with my old lab. I am in a 'do I or don't I' situation. 14yrs old, good joints surprisingly, eats like a typical lab, still greets you with a waggy tail, full bowel control, good coat looks quite healthy on the outside, however, huge fatty lump on her side (think the size of 2 tennis balls) but that doesn't affect her, deaf as a door post or playing ignorant in her old age, but when she has been sleeping she wakes up and has started coughing and coughing and then gagging and will do this for quite a while and walk around abit like she doesn't know what to do then she will settle and be fine again. I think it is her lungs filling up whilst she is lying down sleeping. I don't know what to do, don't want her in pain which I dont think she is but I think things are happening inside that I can't see. I took her down the vets and they said bring her down when you think she is ready and I thought I would know the right time but I don't think I do, or do I and it's not that time yet, gosh I don't know. I sometimes wish I could come downstairs in the morning and she will have gone.

Thanx everyone.........and hugs to your oldies(((hugs))) my kitty has indeed perked up, she has ran around twice like somehing is chasing her(maybe a hairball) geting ready to be hurled up, but she has eaten her brekkie

I know exactly what you mean Cayla, last year was just horrible cos Jura was deteriorating from Christmas 2007 onwards and was finally PTS in April
frown.gif
Then I worried myself sick about Talisker from April onwards, but never dreamed he would be PTS in December

I love having oldies around but they are sooooo much heartache too

It seems really odd now having Islay aged 6 and Flick aged 2 - I have to keep reminding myself that Flick will be around for at least the next 10 years

Another I know what you mean .

It was the same with shane , he was gradually going down hill and it was a "when is the right time ? " God love him though he did give us a helping hand to answer that question when he lost the same spark in his eyes that he had when he was fitter and healthier .

Like you say Cayla its great to have them at that age and better to loose them then, than to loose them suddenly when they are fit and well .

Thats animals and life for you I suppose .

Glad Kitty has perked up and hope doggy continues to do his walks for a few more years yet .

Who knows eh ?
