I'm sure this must happen all the time. My two are now fifteen years old and showing quite a bit of wear and tear.

Often slightly unsound.

I don't have my own land, but have finally got to a stage where I now have the confidence to jump quite high whilst hunting and really enjoy a good fast canter and long hacks.

I'm no spring chicken myself and really want to do as much of that type of riding as I can in the years i have left.

My daughter and a friend share the horses between us. What do others do in this situation? Any suggestions?

i still have my old horse who's now retired, she's on diy livery and imo the least i owe her is a happy settled retirement after she gave me 16yrs of fun, but i rode her until she was ready to retire which meant i couldn't do all i wanted but i adore her so went with it. i now have anothrt 2 on diy and you learn to live a few horses!!!!!

i'd also add mine was 14 yrs when i got her and had the most fantastic 12 yrs riding from her, did bsja, all the riding club teams and regional finals, so to me 15 is not classed as slowing down!!!!
she had JA'd before coming to me so her slowing down was still way above my riding level!!!

15 is not that old at all! What sort of wear and tear do you mean?

Ditto, I do not think 15 is old.

What activities do you lik e to do?

I have had them both about 3 years and Lolly was showing signs of stiffness when I got her, she is worse now and often favours a front knee. Poppy is currently on box rest with a re-ocurring inflamed tendon sheath, I will not sell them, or PTS. but really looking for ideas how I can keep them, but also be able to do the type of riding I want. And it not cost a fortune. Tall order I know!

Hunting, pleasure rides, low level endurance and fast hacks.
They are both on Cortaflex and Lolly is also on a Bute substitute.

Lol haha sorry guessed that.

I was in the same boat with my mare, I needed to do more than what was fair on her...I'd been there done that on her so she didnt owe me anything, I could never sell her either but found a lovely loan home for her where she's perfectly happy teaching a lovely ladies daughter how to ride now! Suits both perfectly. I hadnt advertised her for loan either, just came about it!
I sold my little man too as he was far too small for me to do anything serious with
frown.gif
heartbreaking sale though.

I now have my new one who i can do everything I want with and more so am super happy
smile.gif

So story really is...loaned one of mine out, sold the other (though was going to loan him originally but finances proved otherwise

) and got my new one who I am perfectly happy with!

There are a lot of people out there who want a quieter life on horses so maybe you could loan them out but keep them at home. Echo others though, 15 isn't old for a horse these days. I was still doing cross countries and pleasure rides when my oldster was 21.

My horse is 16.
He got bone spavin at 10 and I stopped jumping him and trotting on roads.

At 14 he split his DDFT and was not thought he would ever be sound. He surprised vets and was happily hacked out with only light schooling.

At 15 he was found to have side bone and now has remedial farriery and shoes.

He is now hacked out and lightly schooled, but is uncomfortable in the summer when the ground is hard. He is managed on cortaflex HA, alphabute and cider apple vinegar.

I originally wanted to do x country with him, but I love this horse so much that I have put my x country dreams on hold and enjoy spending time with him and making the most of what we have.

At 15, most horses have the signs of early arthritis. Its all about managing it and adapting work load. If you dont feel you want to do this then the options are, loan to a hacking home, carry on as you are, sell or PTS. Its your choice. Personally, with the financial situation, I would not choose the sell option.

I chose the carry on as we are option and make the best of what we have.

Mid-teens in horses is like 40s in humans, past optimum athletic peak, some still as fit and healthy as ever, but generally speaking, have had a few things patched up and although their minds are still up for running sometimes their bodies aren't so keen. I'm only thirty but the state I'm in, if I was a horse I'd have been shot long ago.

I understand how you are feeling. My 17yo pony has Bone Spavin but despite treatment he is just a light hack now on Bute. I thought I could cope with that but I soon got worried that life was passing me by and I wasn't getting out and doing the things I wanted to do but there was no way that Chum was going anywhere, I owe him a home for life.
I bought another pony and so have 4 in total as also have 2 mini shetlands. I'm skint but I don't care, it's worth it, I'm going out having lots of fun with my new one but still enjoying hacking my old one - in fact I enjoying hacking him more than ever as the pressure is off for him to be 100% and he still loving going out and skipped up the ramp when I took him to a friend's place last week.
Mine all live out 24/7 on a farm with no facilities (but I have transport) so that helps keep costs down.
Perhaps look into keeping them the cheapest way possible, buy something a similar size/shape so they can share rugs and tack, buy a good-doer to keep the food costs down etc etc.
Life is too short

Just got back from a few days in Cornwall. Thanks for your kind answer. I certainly couldn't have them PTS, so I will bear your story in mind, that may be the answer. x

Although I have to say...I'm fitter now than I have ever been (misspent youth)..... apart from the bad back ......and my aching sweeping-up-thumb....and.....and.....and...

They grey in my sig is in his early twenties...he gets a bit stiff on occasions but we manage it....he loves a blast and a fast hack and a bit of jumping but I limit it and he's happy....he just likes to show off now and again.

TBH I would prefer to be doing more than his age would allow but I'll have to put that to one side and put him first.
