Where are all the genuine 14.2hh competition ponies?

I just don't understand the market for this size of pony. Prices seem very high (popular size and time of year, I guess) but at the same time none seem to be selling. We've been looking for a pony for about 6 weeks now with scope to BSJA or who has already jumped affiliated. Every pony I phone about, even ones who had been advertised quite some time ago, seem still to be for sale.

And yet....every one we look at seems to have some large issue, whether it has just come onto the market or has been for sale for a while. I know there's no such thing as the perfect horse or pony, but a huge lump on a joint should be mentioned when I ask "does s/he have any lumps or bumps". Similarly, we've travelled a total of 900 miles now to see 3 ponies all of whom refused to go near fillers. I feel better having had a moan, but I really can't face traipsing around the country weekend in and out.

I've tried asking everyone I know to put the word out, but how did you find your ponies or children's ponies?

Oh, well - back to surfing for sale adverts!

It seems to be the ones you least expect! Friend got one that hadn't jumped for 2 years and she is hoping to do PT next year - doing her PC area and PN this year !
 
Sometimes they aren't the obvious ones! Found ours on the Pony Club website and didn't like her to begin with as she's not anyone's ride, but she gelled with son and is very talented. No lumps or bumps either

She wasn't expensive and think it was fate rather than determined searching.

I've googled your mare and she's a super type. Please pm me if you think she might suit after reading our wish list below.

We're looking for a pony for my son to PC and showjump though I secretly harbour a wish to see him do some WHP (as I did as a child) if the pony was appropriate. Priority though is for a pony of any age who is genuine and can jump. We'd be happy with a novice 5/6yo or an experienced 15yo. We're a very experienced farm home who could supply endless references.
 
Hi i work for the lady who owns her i can get you more info tom. She as been to wembley WHP and has won loads of time getting champ and reserved chap at the yorkshire show in the welsh sec C classes. Plus dressage winning at elem level. She has bred two foals and is a sweetheart. I think she is 14 now but not 100% i will ring clair tom and get some details for you. Where abouts are you based? Ribbon is in wakefield.
 
I think too much faith is put in the internet regarding searching for horses & ponies. There are plenty of horses/ponies out there that are not advertised on the net.

We had a 14h1"pony (genuine size!!!) a few years ago that we jumped around local shows & he did very well, winning almost everything that was worth winning. We never affiliated him, daughter outgrew him & went onto horses, We sold him to a friend who didn't do much with him & she went off to college & they sold him on to another family. He has now been affiliated & has qualified for a couple of classes at Blue Chip. He wasn't sold for a large amount of money either, went with all tack & rugs.... so there are ponies out there if you look. I only know how he's doing now through seeing him mentioned in an article in H&H last week.

Don't pin your hopes on the internet, check at saddlers & with farriers they may be able to point you towards something

Can you try asking for video footage first before deciding if travelling to see it? I do if its far away.

Otherwise, you could always try putting wanted adverts out in your local PC newsletters and websites. Ive bought some super ponies this way.

Just remember looks arent everything, often the most honest ponies are the scruffy ones!
 
I think word of mouth is the best way. We got my daughters jumping pony in that way, she was doin a xc clinic and the instructor just started talking about this other pony, anyway cut a long story short we bought it for a very reasonable amount, the pony isnt your perfect pony can be a bit quirky but we dont mind that plus it makes up for it in the ring jumps its socks off and gets placed every time out infact we are in the process of affiliating her. I found a great 14.2hh when looking at poor quality add's for 15hh or even in some cases 15.1hh horses.. people don't realise how big or small their horses/ponies are...
 
I know how you feel. We've driven miles to see ponies and the one we really liked turned out to have a bad back affecting it's back legs.

Now we have found another through word of mouth and are having it vetted tomorrow.

Don't foget to take your measuring stick. if you want to do 148cm bsja the pony must measure 151cm or under on the day (with shoes). Life height certificates are not valid anymore. Ponies in the first 10 places will be measured.

There are now quite a few ponies for sale which are over height so watch out.

You say ponies in the first 10 places will be measured, but the first 10 places of what competition? I don't recall mention of 10 places in the BSJA's letter?
 
we've just been lucky with ours and they've just found their way into our life without us looking. I went to visit a friends new yard and spotted this cheeky little coloured pony that had outgrown juniors. Ended up buying him and moved him back to the yard a year later, and YOs son had too many ponies to jump, so my sister took on a 14.1hh who is a real superstar and done everything BSJA, so they are around. I think word of mouth is invaluable for finding genuine ponies!
 
We bought on for £1000 he was green done nothing but moved well. He has a large splint on his hind leg that doesnt bother him or us as we dont show. He is now jumping affiliated and will be doing his forst BE next year when daughters 14 at the moment she is doing eventing with the PC. He will be better with more time too as he is now 6 but its been hard work on my daughters part. He is quite quirky & fizzy but it seems alot of competition ponies are but we wouldnt change him for the world and his scope is fab. This is them last summer at Brightling ODE

BlueNRed - that is a wonderful story and all credit to your daughter for her hard work. Sounds like it's paying off!

We are at the stage of utter frustration having seen so many that are not as described though I do know that there is no such thing as the perfect horse or pony. Have spotted one in this week's H&H I like, so fingers crossed...!

I was told by someone whose daughter does junior bsja that the first 10 placed in any bsja class would be measured. We don't do bsja yet so perhaps this isn't right?
 
Logistically that would be a nightmare and not practical I don't think as they need two vets qualified to measure. BSJA sent letter out saying that at direct qualifiers (I assume HOYS, RIHS, Euro Trials) they would measure and a pony could measure out ie more than 3cms over it's height category 3 times before it was considered too big. Can't see them doing that at tiddly little affiliated shows.

that must be what my friend meant then. I don't do bsja at the moment and so have not seen the letter.

You're right that it would be a nightmare measuring at every show!
