Not having much success finding a suitable horse, am looking in usual places, horsequest, horsemart and various pages on fb. There are very few horses in
4-5k category, am looking for safe hacker & happy to jump 70-80cm. Seems to be over £6k, is that the market now or have I missed the right places to look?

Depends on age of horse and work to date. Don’t forget feed has gone up massively as has everything else. I would hope that £5k would buy a novice but anything with miles on the clock is going to increase with more miles! I usually think £3k is basic unbroken price at 3 years then add on for breaking £2k with uplift each year. You may be lucky and find a genuine private seller looking for a good home, otherwise do the sums and prioritise. Hope you find something suitable.

When I was looking last year I was surprised by how much horses had increased in price. I was intending to spend £5-6k but ended up spending more than that and still the market wasn’t easy. He was on Facebook and not advertised elsewhere.
You just need to keep at it & good luck.

I don't know where you are myloubylou, but there are often ones popping up in wilts / glos within that budget (assuming the ads are truthful...)

If you look for a good hacking horse that has never been tried over fences you should be able to school it up to jumping 80cm without too much work.

£4 - £5k seems to buy what you’re describing around here (midlands). You’d get a reasonable cob for that, which is a safe hack, jumps etc. You can spend a lot less if you’re happy with TB. I’ve been looking for something similar at the £2 - £3k mark.

if you go for something 11years old or above they are out there. if you want 6 to 10 years they are there but are more money. if you are looking for a safe hacking horse an older one may be suitable, also most can jump 80 ..where in the country are you (just a rough idea) as that makes a difference to prices...and what size do you want?

Am in the East Midlands, there are lots of people producing & selling connies round here for £6.5k up but they are not my cup of tea. I want Friendly & sane, ideally 15hh mark older rather than younger. I am not the most confident person jumping so need a horse that’s not scared of fillers. Found one that fits the bill but not 100% sound lunged on a hard surface. Buying horses should be more fun.
