We have finally been lucky enough to get our own yard and are doing a few liveries (I've sorted all paperwork as business etc). We thought there would be lots of people in devon crying out for livery but the only enquires we have had have generally been time wasters that either don't turn up or say will ring back and don't or can't pay a month in advance livery. We have also had some that say they are definetly coming so we've put others off as thought we were full then we've never heard from them again.Does anyone else have this problem?

I think its the joys of livery yards I rarely hear of ones that don't get messed around, silly really don't know why they do it but there do seem to be people who just like to waste your time and cause problems, you might find when spring comes people will be a bit more serious about moving

We are in south devon and doing DIY or assisted.im hoping that in the spring people will be more serious. Trying to find nice serious liveries seems to be difficult at the moment.

OP I can feel your pain: have done it, got the DVD/T-shirt, book, duvet cover plus matching knickers and bra's set for timewasters!!!

I don't know what's wrong with people sometimes: all they need do is ring/text, what-have-you.

This happened here when I was trying to find someone for DIY livery; plus its par for the course as well if you're ever trying to sell something or offering for loan....... when I advertised my cobbie for loan last year I had EVERY fruitloop on the phone/e-mailing me, including one woman who fixed an appointment to come not just once but twice, and each time came up with a very lame excuse of why she hadn't turned up, THEN expected me to find time for her a third time and was abusive when I said no!!! Amazing but true. She's in East Devon (still there as far as I know) so wouldn't think she'd bother you, but hey you never know!! :)

Anyway, we DID find a lovely livery in the end and she was well worth waiting for; so basically don't feel pressured but take the time to thoroughly sift everyone and (obvious!) make sure you've fine-tuned your livery agreement as well. Get a little pro-forma/questionnaire so you can be organised when people ring up and or come round to look, i.e. ask them what sort of livery/facilities they want, what sort of horses, what sort of riding they do etc etc. This will help you build up a picture of the sort of yard they're looking for and will help to save you some time in sorting through people.

Don't ever be tempted to have someone on your yard just because you're feeling desperate for someone - we did that here and it was the biggest mistake we ever made - but thank god she only stayed for a month. There IS something worse than no livery and that's the wrong livery, and I can testify that its worth waiting for the right person to come along.

Good luck anyway!

PS meant to add too that you may need to research your local area a bit more??? i.e. tack-shops, local hunts/pony clubs, local riding people, plus a few adverts up in Post Offices/Newsagents/feed merchants etc. Don't go for long wordy adverts, we found the most successful was just say five succinct but descriptive bullet-points in clear type with a horsey motif on it!!! Plus a photo may help, i.e. horses grazing on a nice sunny day with lovely green grass....... ehm, OK so not easy to produce at the mo I fully appreciate!:) But you see what I mean.

Thanks so much.this is sooooo helpful.now living back in the area I've spent most of my horsey life I know that liveries can be a pain and certain ones to avoid but it's still very difficult to get nice liveries and that's if they actually turn up in the first place!arghhhhhh!i always thought having a livery yard would be fantastic I'm beginning to think maybe it isn't quite as bright and Rosen as I thought lol.:(
