Just taken on a brilliant yard with all for horse and rider. Big indoor American stable block, heated rug room, 6x Monarch horse walker, 60x30 gel track sand school with all jumps, own paddocks gr8 hacking to pirbright common just one village road to cross on site teaching and out side teaching welcome, Big private elic gated excess, c.c.t.v and 24hr on site care. And we are cheaper than other yards around us, just 2 miles from Merriest wood close to M3. We cater for all. But we have had NO calls......
Is the Money crunch that bad!!!!

Depends on how much you are charging for DIY and just how much advertising you have done. Large adverts in all local feed and tack stores will help.

Oh dear

How are you advertsing? What are other yards offering? Are you in a difficult location? Also how many horses does the yard take? I know some people don't like big yards if there are smaller ones in the area.

I wouldn't have thought it's because of the credit crunch especially if you're cheaper. Wierd.

How long have you been open? Have you any liveries there already?

Sounds awesome, but I'm not there because:

1. You're in Surrey.

2. Great facilities are wasted on my invalid horses.

3. You don't state the price but I know I couldn't afford it!!!!

I'm sure you'll fill up soon unless you are a crazy YO.

Hi, we have put up all add's in tack shops "buttons" Rockers" "Chobham rider" ect ect we are a small private yard that can hold 12 horse's, as the indoor stable block has 12 13x14 size stables, but we really only want 7 to 8 horse's, we can hold onsite clinic's as the sand school is so big and brill for the summer and the winter months. also put on the internet a few sites, Can't understand it. have checked around all yards in this area and we have come up a bit cheaper. we are in a brill location here... and we can hold horse lorries and their trailers as a very big tarmac car park...

I'm jealous, that's exactly what I'm looking for, unfortunately I'm in bloody Dorset. Never mind where are the liveries, where are the livery yards!!

Ooh thats another point, on your adverts have you put the livery rates? It's just if you haven't some people would look at it and think straight away that it's too expensive for them.

No _clarie_. Thats what i thought to be honest with you... and have made sure we undercut a lot of yards around here. we have not displayed our rates as would like people to phone and come to take a look, but only had 1 chuffing call.... Puzzled....

If people are happy on the yard then they wont move unless the money really forces them to, also you find that once the first lot move on and like it, then start telling their mates and you get move.

What ad's are you doing?

I have just started up a yard in Somerset and was beginning to think that there must be no demand for it here. However, after hearing nothing, have had 3 calls this week and 2 horses coming tomorrow. I'm sure you will get some liveries soon, they just all seem to come at once. You will be full before you know it!

Tbh im just a "normal" horse owner with 2 horses at livery, I probably wouldnt get in touch as your facilities sound wonderful but expensive (im not being rude) if you know what i mean?? I wouldnt ring to find out how much as who wants to admit they cant afford it and feel like a tw@t?? not me lol..... How about putting a Prices strarting from £xx pw in your add?? Hope that makes some sense....
Good luck

Price is a major concern for the majority of horses owners credit crunch or not - if don't put a price people are automatically going to presume it is really expensive - like when you see an ad for a horse which has POA!

Also if someone is happy on their yard they may not want to move even if it is cheaper some people do not need lots of facilities or will sacrifice them to be on a yard with their friends.

It does sound a lovely yard though. Perhaps you could put an ad up at Merist Wood.

A while ago a yard opened just down the road from me, presently i have to drive to my yard so this in theory would have been great, i went to have a look and the problem was that i couldn't take my horse as he would have been the first one there so would have been alone and apparently several people said the same. Could it be something like this?
On the good side maybe it shows that horse owners in your area are loyal to their yard which will be a plus when you get some!!
Good luck and remeber its a new business and will take a while to kick off. Sounds great tho i'm sure your new liveries will be very pleased when they are brave enough to move house xx

Putting a starting at sounds good to get people thinking.
Good luck it sounds lovely. I am sure you will soon be full to the point of turning away

Thanks guy's xx
Will go around the tack shops and pop the price's on. as we are cheeper.... just want the yard to come to life.x
p.s have heard from a mate who has livery in the next village and she has said her livery yard is bending over backwards to keep them all happy, as money is so tight!!!

Again i would also look at the advert and think, i cant afford that.
Putting price on or even a starting at price would make me call if it was within my budget.

What sort of market research did you do before you took over the yard? Perhaps there is no market, and that's why it was available?
Maybe you are not offering the right type of livery for the local market - in terms of grass, DIY, part, full?
Or maybe there is saturation in the area?

Looks really lovely! Was it run as a livery yard before you took it over?

Also not being rude but the arena doesn't look 60 x 30

I think you'll fill up in no time, once word gets out. How long have you been advertising for?

Good Luck we too are about to open our own yard in a couple of months the school is just going in and the paddocks been sorted, we bought a hosue and yard so its interesting to see whats about,we are in Warwickshire and the yard was full uptill 5 weeks ago but they didn't know what was going to happen to the place so they all moved

so hoping to get some back as we are improving the facilities.

It might just be the time of year. People starting to go on holiday etc. Also many people move towards the winter as their needs change.

That looks lovely! I agree, people probably think you are much too posh and expensive and are thus staying away. Definitely put your prices on the ads and give people an idea of what they could expect.

Hi CatherineF,
I'm in Poole but don't mind travelling for the right place! He's stabled in Wimborne at the moment. Do you know of anything then?

I think if you got a website that would be great I have been looking for yards in Surrey recently and I can only see whats on the net!

Is the credit crunch (thing!) really causing this much trouble for horse owners...I hadnt noticed a difference!
