Hello all!

I’m looking to buy my next horse.. but seriously, where are all the super cobs?! If you have a fabulous cob type, I would love to know how you met so that I can make sure I’ve covered all areas 😊

the market really seems to be lacking and I don’t think I’m asking for to much:

15.2hh - 16.2hh
Cob type or Cob x
No older then 10
Brave, hacks alone
Hunting experience a bonus, but a keen x-country horse would be great.
I’m looking to have some fun, do RC and relinquish some lost confidence.
Max budget £7k

Is this really un-achievable? Pointers appreciated!

A word of caution - all except the H&H ad are from a notorious dealer in Wickford ;) Bargepole springs to mind. And the H&H cob was hunted as a 3 yo in Ireland - a bit of a worry re future soundness as he's still only 4...

I know what you mean OP I've been idly looking for similar. There is a better choice if you look from 15hh upwards but you might be better looking for IDX, NativeX as well as cob.

Would not touch that Sam Pheb dealer with someone elses barge pole. It will either be lame or unfit for purpose. Probably both.

A friend of mine has just bought exactly what you're looking for. It took her close to a year to find it.

I was looking for 14.2hh to 15.2hh, with about half your budget, and found mine in under a month. Could you lower your height requirements? My 6.3" instructor doesn't look too out of place on my horse.

Thanks for the responses all! I hadn’t considered the pre-loved site before, but I will add that to my stalking list.

The ‘Dodgy Dealers’ group on Facebook has been useful thus far!

Pippity - I could stretch down to 15.1, but I’m quite leggy (5’8), though not as tall as your instructor - it gives me assurance!

I would definitely be open to smaller. My boy is 15hh pushing 15.1. I’m 5ft 9 and I don’t think I look big at all, he takes up the leg well. I bought him from a local producer on sales livery and his owner was well known and known to be honest.

My boy was only rising 4 when I bought him and paid a fraction of your budget. We had a few teething issues as he was young and nervous but after a year he is turning into exactly what you’re looking for.

He is Welsh D x Cob.

I would definitely try and look locally first, in the world of Facebook it is easy to find out whether sellers have good reputation, but even private homes. Ask local horse professionals, farriers etc, local producers/trainers and riding clubs etc.
Good luck!

Oh your boy is absolutely gorgeous, and yes, you look perfect on him! Thank you for the re-assurance.

Right - I’m upping my game this week, hopefully in the near future I’ll have a new best friend 😊

No idea if this is a good/bad dealer.

Thanks Asha! I’ll reach out to this dealer. I think the second phase of my search if I can’t find anything in the UK, is to pop over to Ireland. But my golly, that 3 year old is quite lovely!
