I can't find one anywhere. Surely someone sells them? Just had to buy yet another new gate. No amount of anti chew spray seems to stop them. It's getting expensive. I don't want to use electric fencing as it's fiddly when you need to open and close the gate, and looks untidy.

WHere is your local farm supplies outlet? Look in the yellow pages. Be careful with the guttering idea as if the teeth get hold of it they can lead to nasty jagged edges and splinters.

I will have a ring around. There is nothing less than 20 miles away from me I don't think, so I've been looking online. Really surprised that there don't seem to be any ready made gate chew strips like there are for stables.

I bought a strip of galvanised tin, formed it round an unchewed gate, and then nailed it in place on the chewed gate. It worked fine and there are no sharp edges if you tap them well in. If you want to avoid the tooth-happy beasties deforming the strip over the old chewed patches then fill them first with something.

That's an excellent suggestion. Thank you!

Metal fabricator will be able to do you a nice one with countersunk holes for the screws to secure it to the gate. The other alternative is an all metal gate.

Thanks. I've bought the gate now. I did think of getting a galvanised one but OH thought it wouldn't look as nice. Is metal fabricator online?

We made a new stable door for an old building and used metal strips, which are used to install insulation material in houses. A friend recommended it. Not sure if it will be suitable for a gate but worked well for our stable doors. NOt expensive.

For metal fabricator try sheet metal workshop. You can also get tie down strapping from your local builders suppliers which might do the job. But some sheet metal bent to fit the gate would look nicer, so I'd have a word with my local sheet metal workshop. In fact, I am needing to do just that for a gate and stable doors. Thanks for reminding me!:)

Thanks. I'll have a look see what's in my area. May just go into Jacksons or Jewsons.

Warning: If you DIY it it can get addictive. My gateposts ended up with cute little shaped and hammered hats of lead. There is a practical use for them but they were such fun to do.

If it is only t edges that they chew then L shaped strips from B&Qscrewed on to the edges works fine. That's what we used as chew strips on a stable door, one front one back.

Our yard has strips of tyre on top of some doors - tyre cut in half, cut from the open inner edge part way to the closed outer edge, and it will layout pretty flat along the top. Ours are just bolted into place.
