Does anyone know or have any cheap leather headcollars suitable for using in the field?

Used to be able to buy them in a greyish coloured leather, but haven't seen any of these type around for many years.

I don't mind cheap Indian leather, although don't want "hard as iron" or it will rub. I am however happy to soften leather a bit with oiling it, or feeding it before use.

Any good ideas anyone?

If you look on ebay you can normally get cheap black leather headcollars with or without the throat clip for around the £20 mark. there is one on ebay right now which is £15.95 in pony, cob and full and another two or three for £19.95.

Shires aren't bad, can usually be picked up for £20-30 and with a couple of oils they're fine.

Facebook horse sites. I picked up some scratched/old ones for £5. Just said they needed to be useable but any condition.

would it not be better and safer to buy some 'fieldsafe' nylon ones that would come undone if the horse was unfortunate enough to get caught on something? That 'greyish' colour leather is chrome leather and certainly wont break.
It is easy for a horse to get caught on a branch or gate catch and pull back in panic, or even get hiis hind leg in the headcollar whilst scratching his ear.....

Thank you all and thanks stormox - that's another idea, there are a few other makes other than fieldsafe as well isn't there? Or are fieldsafe the best of this type?

I didnt know fieldsafe was a make- i just thought it was a type of headcollar fixed with velcro not a buckle. I think shires do them

It depends how likely you think they might be to rub it off/play (the latter isn't an issue for us as companion is a mare and only tolerates ;) ). My own wears a headcollar year round now as he needs to wear a nose cover due to liver issues.
I did a fair bit of research, I prefer my IV horse one as it is more breakable- it has velcro over the headpiece and the nose. However he does rub it in summer a bit so I also have a libby's one that has a fold back velcro attachment to the head piece.

You can get ones with rubber rings as the breakaway too though some people say they break too easily.

Premier equine have got some in their sale for £21. They are imported leather but not very stiff Nd I'm sure will soften up nicely on oiling.
