A 6month - 2y.o short/medium coated GSD bitch (spayed please!) that will guard and bite if necessary - don't worry dad worked in security with dogs for 10 years so we know how to handle one that will bite) but soppy with the family and it must be a rescue..... Would consider a doberman.

and after deciding no more GSD's because they go downhill in old age more than most dogs we've decided we can't be without one!

So any pointers as to where we could find one? Won't be looking properly until next spring time I shouldn't think (unless the worst happened to Heidi

There is also German Shepherd Welfare (contact Mrs J Harrison 01375 405580) and Vigil German Shepherd Rescue (Mrs Garnham 020 8546 4943). These are both based in the South of England but have contacts in most areas. We also have a GSD rescue kennel near me (Shropshire), they are quite low key and not totally sure they are still operating but could find out for you if that is any help.

What exactly do you mean by wanting a guard, cos I know most rescue kennels won't rehome as a guard dog i.e. to be left on premises, but if you want a dog as part of the family who will guard if the need arises then you should be fine. To be honest I think most Shepherds would guard their families if they really thought they were being threatened.
 
Oh god no! Not left on the premises. Well, we want her to be part of the family but say if someone broke in she'd guard and be a bit threatening. Its hard to explain. Heidi will bark at strange noises and always let us know if someone unfamiliar is around, I guess thats what I mean. She lives in with a couple of Inuits and I know that unless someone shot her the Inuits are safe...does that make sense? But at the same time she's a big softy and part of the family and does everything the other dogs do!

Thats what I thought you meant. IMO you don't want a guard dog in the true sense of the word, you just want a companion who will look after you. In fact if you ask for a guard dog you are quite likely to be landed with a dog with an unpredictable temperament which is no fun at all. Sometimes the most aggressive dogs are actually quite nervous and probably would be more interested in saving their own skin than yours. My old bitch would guard me with her life but had the most gentle temperament in everyday situations and adored children. Sadly I lost her last year and her daughter is not nearly as confident, whilst she barks if anyone comes we joke that she would be more likely to go for help than confront a burglar. I hope you have Heidi for a good while yet but if I can help in any way when you do look for another please feel free to ask. Glad you have decided not to desert the breed.
