Where can I get THERMALS?!

I got some thermals at Tesco - from the mens section, they are like long sleeve round neck tops - worn them all winter, and look fine if it's too hot and you need to reveal them pretending they ARE just a top. Think they were £5 a pop, don't quote me.. sm x

Another vote for M&S, they are nice and thin so not bulky under your clothes but keep you toasty. I think mine were £10 for leggings and £5 for a t-shirt style top.

Cotswold Outdoor

Don't bother with thermals from high street or fashion type stores they just aren't suitable for serious outdoor use.

Helly Hanson are reasonably priced and last forever. I have got a long sleeve helly hanson lifavest that is about as old as me, I inherited it from my dad! It is sooooooo warm and long enough to tuck in. In fact long enough to keep my bum warm. They are breathable, wick sweat and won't let you get too warm in summer either. I always ride in a baselayer, my favourites are helly hansen ones, I wear them on their own in summer and with layers on top in winter. In spring and autumn they are good on their own with a waterproof so you stay dry but don't overheat.

If you are feeling flush and want the creme de la creme of baselayer look for 100% merino wool by ice breaker, smart wool or helly hansen. They are warm, breathable, wicking and smell resistant!!!

Cotswold are the best national retailer for this type of thing but you might get a bargain from your local independant outdoor shop, these tend to cluster around national parks and areas popular with hikers and climbers. Bwetsy Coed in Snowdonia, Kendal in the Lakes and Hathersage or Buxton in the Peaks are good places to shop for good outdoor gear at great prices.

You will never go back when you have one of these baselayers, I have seven (I think) of different weights and sleeve lengths, and I always look at them when the catalogue comes out. Hubby is a convert too!
