Where can I go for decent tuition in the South West?

I want to book a course of lessons to brush up on my riding skills, as I feel like theres a lot I don't know, or have just never been taught! So I need to find a really good, patient instructor and equestrian centre. My work pay up to £200 for a non work related course so this is the perfect way to spend it.

I was originally thinking of a residential weekend type course, but my money will probably go further if I don't stay there and just book a course of lessons rather than cram it all in. I've been looking at Talland Equestrian, is that any good? I'm willing to travel a fair distance for the right place.

I used to have lessons at the RAC Saddle Club in Bovington (next door to the tank museum). They were really good lessons and well schooled horses. I only stopped because it was just too far to get from Poole just for an hours riding (especially when non-horsey parentals were driving me).

Do you mind me asking how long your course is, and how much its costing? I assume you had private lessons, or can they pair you up with someone of a similar ability so it lowers the cost? PM if you prefer.

I always get a bit nervous and intimidated about going to these kind of places, as everyone is bound to be an amazing rider and I'll be a total novice in comparison, totally out of my depth. I'm used to riding hairy cobs and not the kind of posh horses they'll have.

The horses are fab and my riding has come on leaps and bounds. Sam has a local B&B he can do a deal with and so you'll get a lot of lessons for your money!! I go there once a fortnight from the same location as you

of course! Tis not posh at all, I am the most nervous rider ever and it's been brilliant, I usually ride cobs at home!
I came Sun afternoon and am here until Thurs pm.
So 4 nights accom with all meals included
then lessons - 3 x student group lessons, 2 x private lunge lessons, 1 x private sidesaddle lesson, 2 x private jump lessons with Brian Hutton all in including room and meals has cost me roughly £425
Joining in with student lessons works out cheaper but it is def worth having at leat one lunge lesson. There's been a max of 3/4 in my group lessons
Seriously it has been worth every penny and I don't want to go home
 
Thanks. I would want to do a mixture of flat and jump, but realistically my position needs work so I think I'm going to have to go back to basics before I can think about jumping.

Will check out the link now, how long does it take you to get there from Bristol? I'm in redland so pretty close to the centre.

Its not a bad price really considering all your accommodation and meals are included, plus all those lessons. What do you do in the evenings though, is there anything to do on site?

I'll email them to ask about courses, only thing is it would have to be a weekend thing as I only have 1 days holiday left to take this year!
 
well not a massive amount TBH - tonight people were riding till about 7ish, I've brought laptop so I have net and dvds, there's a tv in the common room bit too. However I am SO tired and achy, all I want to do is lie on the sofa!!!
If the next two days go as well (fingers crossed) I am coming back again as soon as I can
 
I guess you'd be a bit bored without access to the internet! It sounds like a really good place, I'm definitely going to check it out further, and the place that Spotted Cat recommended as they have beautiful Spanish horses there. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay at Talland.
