Is there anywhere in Essex where I can actually go and try a few different sizes and designs on my dog?

You're best going to a rally, either just canicross or general dryland racing - there's usually equipment supplier(s) in attendance and they will be able to help you with the fitting. It's also useful to be able to see the different styles on harness in use on different types of dogs. If you have a look on Facebook one of the independent canicross groups will probably be able to list events in your area - something like https://www.facebook.com/groups/82005099733/?fref=ts.
The other option is to get up to somewhere like Crufts, Discover Dogs etc. - there's an inter-club canicross display at Crufts this year, Xtradog and Non-Stop Dogwear are in attendance among other suppliers.

I found my local club who have club kit and let you try things (belts, harnesses etc) until you find one you like and buy your own. I have a company very close.to.be who custom make harnesses so off there as soon as pennies allow!
