I am looking for where I could get lessons on a true schoolmaster, with an instructor that could take me from bare basics right through.

Do places like this exist? We don't seem to have anywhere like this locally.

Thanks for the links both, I need someone on my level who can start me and take me right through the stages and un-do the bad habits 24 years of riding without lessons has created!

Might as well spend my extra spare time doing something productive!

Wow Dovecote do 4 day clinics - that could be so good for me!! :D

Kit - Sam completely took my riding apart and rebuilt it. It was about 3 months before I came off the lunge, and about another 6 before I was allowed off a 20m circle. But it was the best thing I ever did. I can actually ride now, instead of keeping the horse between me and the ground whilst doing a vague approximation of the movements in the right places. It improved my dressage scores by over 10%. It was hard work, utterly exhausting, but really really worthwhile.

ETA: If you do a 4 day clinic first off you will never walk again! Go for regular lessons to build up the muscle fitness first, seriously!

LMAO @ never walk again! Eep - but a good eep!

Hmm well its two hours away from me, what about 2 lessons a month with him and then a clinic later on down the line? Thoughts on that? Dovecote PR guru ;) :)

Berriewood Farm in Shropshire is a fab place who have excellent instructors and horses that do BHS exams up to level 4 I think. Have allege facilities and really friendly :) don't have time ATM to get you the like but just google it and it will come up :) x

I second what Spotted Cat said. Definitely go to Dovecote, and definitely go for a few individual lessons before trying to do a clinic, or you may die! ;-)

While I'm stuck up here in Porthmadog I'm going to give this place a go: http://www.lusitanocymru.co.uk/

I know its a long way but you could always come and join me for a weekend? :)

I've been to her twin sister Justine's (Horses in Harmony) place before - loved it! Had a lesson on a 22 yo Shire x Arab I think she was and unless I kept the whip out the way, she kept going in to spanish walk. But the whole experience was fab and I rode some things that I couldn't do on my own horse, so I could feel how they should feel. I have heard the sister is just as good.

Not sure if it is too far for you, but how about Talland? I have been having lessons with Tom on a horse that competes up to elem, but they also have their advanced schoolmasters, although if you ride them they need to have already seen you ride and it is only senior instructors that can teach you on them. They also do lunge lessons, courses etc.
Bloody hard work, but they have some fab horses and really try to match you with one that will suit you and what you are after trying to learn, along with the right instructor for you. Not like my previous experiences of a riding school at all - I have never come close to learning so much in a riding school lesson!

Thanks, will look into them too.

The instructor and the vibe they give me is the main thing, I was totally crippled by the cruelty of one person who made me take my first assesment lesson infront of advanced students (cow) so I am really nervous getting lessons. So someone kind and with the right way, to get through my nerves is imperative!

That's exactly what you'll get at Dovecote - it's quiet and you'll get kind-hearted (but very thorough!) one-to-one attention and a lot of work on your confidence. I've been to Talland too, and they have some great horses and instructors, but if you're a bit over-awed by riding in front of people then you might not love it as you'd be in a school with other lessons going on and quite a few people milling about so maybe that's one for later?

Ooh no that wouldn't be for me! I'd cry!

I just read a reply from Fiona and Sam at Dovecote and I will definitely be going there, seems fantastic.

Huntley School of Equitation gets avote from me. Carole And Judith taught me so much, both very different in style but compliment each othervery well. Judith is a 'do this, do that' whilst Carole let's you figure it out for yourself then explains why it did or didn't work!

They're not far from Ross-on-Wye, very friendly and no pressure as not as busy as Talland...

www.spires-academy.com they are in Oxfordshire. Only recently set up but have schoolmasters from novice to advanced and teaching from BHS instructors and trainers that have excellent competition records. Also do residential course etc. Worth a look?
