Hello,

I am back on here seeking more advice! (don't know what I'd do without this forum!)

I have been riding my highland in a thorowgood gp saddle, it's been great in that it was a bargain and it's adjustable so perfect as he grows.

But, I'm just not comfortable on it somehow, I used to be able to ride all day in any saddle but I must just be getting older! I fidget around and keep lengthening my stirrups (I like riding long) and find it hard to 'settle'.

As we're hoping to build up the miles this summer, and eventually do long distance I've started thinking about getting a different saddle (although we are possibly limited for a year or two in that we need an adjustable gullet)

I do like the look of Australian stock saddles, and the western saddles might be nice too- but having never sat on either, I haven't a clue what they are like. the stock saddles look like they combine comfort with security, which would be a bonus :-)

is there anywhere you can hire saddles to try at home? or anywhere to go to try on someone else's horse?

I just don't know where to start and would really like to test one or two before shelling out the money!

still haven't passed my trailer test (sore point!) so can't take pony anywhere to try.

thanks :-)

Hi I once helped my friends husband buy a 2nd hand western saddle for his wife. The company came over from West Yorkshire, ive Just googled and think it was Hooves Western @ Birkenshaw. The woman was fantastic brought ten saddles out to try and we were successful in the secret mission she was shocked we had managed to do it without her knowing LOL

many thanks for the replies :-)
LovesCobs you made me laugh- I probably shouldn't admit this but I did search for 'stick saddles' without thinking before I realised you meant stock saddles :D funnily enough, nothing came up!!

Try Maureen Webb of Horsemanshipsaddlery.co.uk. I recently had a swinging fender stock saddle made to measure and the quality is fantastic for about £800. She will measure you and your horse and guide you through a bespoke saddle order. Far more comfortable than the Kimberley Aussie Stock saddle as it has a more sensible leg position than the traditional chair seat. I am delighted with mine which I got just before NewYear. She is out Selby way. She will bring a couple out for you to view. Where in Yorkshire are you based? If you are near me you could come & see mine. My saddle fits a heavyweight 17hh pure bred Irish Draught, so a Highland will be no problem.

thank you for the suggestions :-)

Bungo, that's a kind offer. I'm up on the North York Moors (as I've discovered since I've moved here, Yorkshire is a very big county!) but Selby isn't too far away.

Have PM'd you. Also tried to post a picture of my saddle but not very techy so might not work.
