Where did all the Piebalds and Skewbalds go?

To throw something else into the pot, there are very few true piebalds. Mine looks piebald but is in fact skewbald. Things move on in the horse world - there are many phrases which have changed over the years, not just changed coloured for piebald and skewbald.

One of the main reason for the change is the name of the showing classes and one of the societies to be called Coloured Horse and Pony.

My horse's passport (CHAPS) has him down as a black tobiano. I always describe him as piebald though.. people tend to give me a blank look when I use black tobiano, although i do think that it's more descriptive of his coat pattern.

Hubby and I both still call horses piebalds or skewbalds and hate the term 'coloured'. Just to throw a spanner in the works, he was looking over my shoulder while I was on here last night and saw an advert for a buckskin. Spitt..."what's wrong with dun?" he asks.

Nothing wrong with dun, except it is genetically a different colour to Buckskin. Dun, as you might see in a Highland pony for example, will have characteristics such as dorsal stripes etc. Buckskin is the correct name for a bay horse with 1 cream gene, just as palomino is the correct name for a chestnut with 1 cream gene.

I call my 'coloured' horses tobianos as genetically that is what they are, so as a breeder its important to me to understand their genetics. The buyers of my foals can call them skewbalds, piebalds, coloureds or what ever they like
