Well i bought my mare from llanybydder horse sales back in 1992 and i still have her 16yrs later, she was an absolute bargain and a fab find, cant imagine life without my super sales bought mare, i would buy from there again, i will be going next autumn to possibly get myself a youngster as i cant breed from her sadly

Did you get your horse privately or at auction?
Would you buy from auction if you have not? or dont you like auctions? I think they get alot of bad press personally and i think you can get some real great bargains from there, i know you are more at risk if a horse is doped or high on pain relief to hide an underlaying problem but i still think auctions can be great for buying
whats your thoughts? i am being nosy as i am bored and hungover

We bought one from auction and the rest privately, one being from the breeder. The one we bought at auction was a poor straggly thing that we felt sorry for. We got her for £99.99(90 guineas) which was cheap at auction at that time.
 
i've never had the nerve to buy at auction, have seen some great bargains though... including, at a sales years ago, a cracking well-bred totally unspoilt and untried event 4 yr old (by Cruise Missile iirc) which went for £1200... wish i'd had some cash that day!
as for mine, i bought one from a friend, bred two of the ones i have now, bought one on horsequest, and bought one as a yearling after seeing the ad somewhere online. i've bought from dealers too, without problems.

yes, i still regret not grabbing the Cruise Missile mare, you couldn't have bred and kept her for that time for that price, and she was lovely to boot.
i think you need a lot of courage to buy from sales too though.
former neighbour of mine when i lived in northants, i was told recently, just bought a lame horse very very cheaply, dosed it up on bute, sent it to the sales, made £2k. poor new owners, totally ripped off, and poor poor horse...
 
Only ever bought through private sales. I do go to my local auction quite a lot however I never have the nerve to buy anything as I am very worried about it being drugged up to the eyeballs and I don't like to waste what little money I have. I do agree they get a lot of bad press and you could pick up some decent horses from there and I would love to be able to buy one of the bargins.

It really is a shame when people do this kind of thing, i would be scared to buy something ready to go so to speak, we were lucky with my mare, but i would feel more comfortable buying a youngster, i will be looking to buy a 6month old foal from the autumn winter sales next year, either llanybydder or something nearer to me in bristol

if you have a good knowledge of horse flesh, then can't see why sales should be avoided. It's possible to get stitched up in all spheres of horse purchasing, personally though, I'd go for word of mouth, every time!
 
I got one from Hereford market in 1990 and she has been fab, shes now 22. I couldn' afford anything that was going through the ring, then she came in, really skinny, I made the first bid and then no one else bid so she was mine. Hadn't even seen her outside the ring....was just a spur of the moment buy.

I bought my little mare at Reading sales in 1995 and still have her - she's 16 now and is a little star.

I heard about my gelding from someone who knew the seller and who thought he would be suitable for what I wanted to do. He's been very difficult to deal with, but I still have him 4 years on.

I think there's a fair chance of getting stung no matter what method you use to buy a horse!!

my mare did not sell in the ring, she did not make enough money so we bought her from the irish gypsy outside the ring for £650
 
Got mine from the 2nd most dodgy dealer in kent (couldn't beat tom bonner but not far off!)

Every horse there has some kind of problem, mine was a LOU mark which I stupidly had no idea what it meant. But other people have unwittingly bought psychos, horses double the age their passport states, ponies with chronic laminitis and one that was blind in one eye! Trading standards are onto them now.

Luckily turned out more or less OK for me, paid £1500 for a bombproof, vice free, ridiculously talented horse.

Unfortunately she has the brain of a competition horse too but I'm learning to live with it

MORAL OF THIS STORY - no matter where your horse comes from, bloody well GET IT VETTED!!!!!!!!!!
 
I've bought privately and direct from a stud. We were really done with the private sale and after 6 months decided to have the horse PTS. Then we shared a horse but when we came to buy him he failed the vetting for suspected navicular (later found out he developed navicular so huge thanks to vet!) and then we bought Super C D in 1999 Suma Stud and 9 years later we still have her

I'd buy from an auction (if I'd the money!)
 
i bought mine from a riding school, had my boy nearly 2 months, but didnt have enough money for vetting, riding school was honest with me and so was my ri, but touch wood he seems sound and i love him to bits.

mollie was a chance ride from a friend and i still have the ride on her 3 years later!!!

i love her to bits wouldnt have her any other way!

chester... was an idea thrown about by the owner of pink equine last year, it didnt materialise and then imagine my amazement when she contacted me earlier this year and asked if i would like to take him on loan
