I was wondering where you were most likely to fall off or have an accident - I have my own view of what the most dangerous part of horse handling is...interested to see what the response is.
My last fall? Opening the gate of the school after I'd finished schooling. Landed sitting on my bottom - not alot would have helped me, except maybe more padding on my bottom!! YO found it hilarious and told me to get fat
My nasty fall was just as I was about to get off, feet out of stirrups, talking to people of the ground about the ride and bang straight up and over backwards.
Fell off jumping lots of times.
I've had two nasty falls that spring to mind. One was when show jumping - gridwork, my horse took two bounce elements at the same time and somersaulted on top of me. I wasnt wearing a body protector but luckily escaped with slight concussion and a broken hand - and I'd go as far as to say if I'd had a BP on I'd have been less agile and may have been unable to roll away from her as quickly as I did.
Other nasty fall was out hacking, on my own. I was bending down from the saddle to open a gate, when a bird flew out of the hedge and startled Elz. She leapt to the side and I went straight out the front door, head first into a rock. I wasnt knocked out and held onto the reins, which may not have been the best of ideas as she carried on whirling around and ended up standing on my arm, right on the bicep. I've got some permanent muscle damage there (although I never got it seen to) - nine years on, there's still a fair bump there and it aches when I do too much. Again, I wasnt wearing a BP but it wouldnt have protected me even if I had been.
Last time I fell off I technically wasn't on yet, I still only had 1 foot in stirrup when ponio trotted off and I fell backwards onto my bum. Time before that horse was fresh and mini rearing then bucking so over his head I went. Before that I was walking my lad out while he was recovering from tendon injury and he decided to buck off some of is excess energy and as I moved to get out of the way he caught my elbow with his back leg and the force threw me to the floor. Only injury from these is the last one where I just had swelling, bruising and a few cuts. I think every aspect of having and riding horses can be dangerous and we just need to be constantly aware. I'm most scared of falling off while hacking but I don't hunt or do XC but I'd probably be scared of falling doing these too!
I've had numerous falls (!) mostly stupid or funny but the ones where I have actually hurt myself have been jumping - or rather horsey refusing to jump and i land under/on jump. Ouch!
I have fallen off jumping, flat schooling, warming up for dressage, and hacking at various times.
I've also been hurt on the ground. I once clashed heads with a horse while rugging up, luckily I still had my hat on as even through my hat it was a serious enough knock to really make me see stars! I stood up as he put his head down and he clonked me with his cheekbone ouchhee! Not to mention being trodden on, barged, bitten etc.
My worst fall was jumping bareback when the horse bronced, only two others have needed a medical visit one was in the dressage warm up when daft mare took the funnies and bronced before pissing off round the arena refusing to be caught, third which only needed a "just incase" x-ray was jumping a mare who had developed a particularly vicious stop. I was wearing my body protector then too and hurt my ribs at the same time, not sure if they were broken as the hospital didn't x-ray them, just the ankle.
Everything else has been just bruises.
Oh and once killed a pair of jodhs in a fall too. Ripped the bum out of them - oops!
Out hacking....my horse does the 'canter-to stop- dead- and fling- yourself -sideways' move....and I have been known to fly gracefully through the side door.
Twisted my leg.....BP wouldnt have helped there either
I ticked showjumping as the last fall I had was doing an "indoor xc" event but the fence was more like a showjumping fence. I landed flat on my back and was quite badly winded and bit bruised. I was wearing my BP as I always do for any jumping and I'm convinced I would have been more badly injured without it, possibly with some broken ribs. I fall off a lot more showjumping that xc as my boy is much less likely to stop xc!
Like most people I've had lots of falls when doing all sorts of different things but my worst accidents/injuries have always been when on the ground handling (usually young) horses.
My last fall was three weeks ago. We were jumping a bank and Zoom didn't notice the edge and pulled to the right (she lost her right eye in an accident). She fell off the side, flipped over and landed on her side with me underneath.
We slid along the ground together. I hurt my shoulder but we were lucky to both come out of it pretty much unscathed. I WAS wearing my bp and I'm sure it saved me from broken ribs. She has fallen on me before and again my bp stopped serious injury.
Last fall was when I tried to get Belle to jump a spread that she didn't like the look of - she cat-leapt it and unseated me, which scares her so she bolted, with me hanging around her neck. I figured I couldn't hang on so let myself go, and ended up landing on my face. Broke the peak on my cap, bruised my nose (luckily no black eyes) but bust my lip and it swelled and I looked like a duck for about a week. Worst part was that my two friends were leaving the yard and saw it all and came running over, I just wanted them to pretend they hadn't seen it, bruised ego and all.
Have to say, OH is great if he's around when I have an accident - he leaves me and catches Belle, which is the most important thing to me as she panicks and legs it.

DH tells me off for falling off, he's worse than my non-horsey mum, he gets really cross with me, even though as he rides he knows full well it is a risk you take and that accidents happen even if you aren't being stupid.
Last accident wasn't even handling the horse! I was walking through the field to fetch mine when other pony came up behind me, span and booted me the bottom and top of leg.
Most potentially dangerous accident also occurred on the ground when horse kicked out while having studs fitted. Thankfully I was wearing BP as just about to go XC and the BP took most of the force. Lots of bruising and a small tear in liver but docs said it could have been so much worse.
Hmmm just thinking back and I've really only had 2 nasty accidents falling from horse.....
My first & hopefully last bad accident was showjumping, silly pony took off far to early and rotated over the showjump resulting in a broken collar bone. - genuinly dont think BP would of helped
last fall was out hunting and silly TB reared before the ditch then went to walk down & kept walking all the way to the bottum untill she was lying in the ditch - i steped off & got back on!!
ticked on the ground tho as im my OP this is where many friends/ relatives have a had bad accidents!
my last bad accident was on my old nutter or a horse at a local xc course, we just went for a jolly hack round the grounds and pony decided he would much rather have me off, queue bucking and bronking all the way across the course, and me on the floor with a broken collar bone and concussion. i cant remember even falling off or the pain
tis great!
oh and i wasnt wearing a BP
most of my recent falls have been jumping as new spooky pony does not like the scary fillers! i have learnt to land on my feet though
Everywhere. Have managed to get a swollen/bruised eye and a bruised arm in the last week from handling (one horse bit me, another headbutted me
)
My only serious fall has been jumping but tbh could have happened anywhere. Horse tripped, possibly stood on her o/r boot, and fell over, I broke my collar bone. Have only fallen off once jumping apart from that, horse stopped and I went crashing through the poles.... Wasn't wearing a BP for either, and it wouldn't have helped either.
other than that they have been hacking I think....accidents happen everywhere.
Riding the chestnut in my siggy round the farm i had him on,a swan flew at us well he went one way i went other, him being the swine he is to catch i didn let go,well i had to as he was dragging me and stood on my hip, bolted across 2 wheat fields and onto a live railway line.
All ended safe and well but the most frightening thing i ever seen him running along the railway track.
QR I voted on the ground whilst handling, as I think its the time when you are least likely to be wearing appropriate protective gear and personally I feel very vunerable handling a big snorting horse!!
I have had a horse rear and come down on my head (THANK GOD he was unshod and I was actually wearing a hat - rare occasion) been trampled several times and been kicked too. Also have permanent muscle damage when the rearer picked me up by my arm in his teeth.
I've only ever had 'proper' injuries from falling off - broken collar bone from a horse who fell on me whilst jumping, broken ribs and concussion from a broncing youngster, etc - but I've had far more 'incidents' in general when I've been on the ground.
Only injury I have had was when hacking during the school holidays this summer when a pair of runners came round the corner unexpectedly and Ellie went up and to the side. Then went round a bit more as I was hanging off her side
Managed to hang onto reins as I landed on my back
Pulled the muscle in my shoulder/back
Wasn't wearing a bp as don't possess one. Yet
Had my feet trodden on a fair few time by the baggage doing star jumps though
My little accident happened when I got on my horse for the 1st time (When we found he had not been mouthed properly) he was on the lunge rein,I was on him, suddenly he took off I only had one foot in the stirrup, and lost my balance, hurt my back, has knocked my confidence. (been broken in proffesssionally now). Loves to tread on feet.
