Where do dealers get their horses from

Someone posted on here asking about dealers who take horses in part-exhange. One of the replies was along the lines that dealers would pay very little for a horse from a private home as they would assume there was something wrong with it. So where do they get their horses from? They can't all come over from Ireland or be bought in sales? Just wondering as there are several dealers on Horsemart who have really cheap horses for sale...(and no I am most definitely not looking for another one

Believe me - a lot of the cheap horses for sale HAVE come from the sales.....

Dealers i know, breed, buy from sales, take part exchanges and buy cheap horses for sale privately or just offer people for their horse. They also do a lot of dealing between themselves. Infact they get them from every aspect possible.
Not all dealers buy thinking it has something wrong with it fron private homes. They buy to supply the demand, they are the supermarket of the horse world if you like.

It depends on the dealer. Some dealers go over to mainland Europe and buy horses from there to bring home, some take on private horses for sale and schooling and take commisson. Some buy from breeders and bring on/break in to sell. Most of the lower end dealers wil buy their horses from the sales though. They also buy cheap horses privately, that might be cheap because the owner is having problems with it etc.

Dealers I know import from mainland Europe and Ireland but the majority of the horses they get are from private homes who can not overcome a problem with their horses. I have had lots of horses and ponies off dealers that have been great but just needed either a good telling off and/or more work to keep them ticking over.

The dealer we buy from buys his WB's from breeders in Denmark i think as youngsters and then takes them to his place in France until they are 3/4 years old, then he's brings them over here to sell.

His fjords come direct from the breeders again in Denmark i think, they run a riding school so some go into that and the others are sold off i think

When he used to sell coloured they'd come direct from the breeders in wales

As has been mentioned many buy in from Ireland & the continent & from sales & other dealers. Alot of dealers buy from private owners who invariably have bought a horse that is totally wrong for themselves. Many buyers over estimate their riding ability & buy totally the wrong horse. The horses then end up with issues that the owner cannot sort out & a horse with problems sells for alot less money. They will take the horse, school it, sort it out & sell it on for considerably more..... simple isn't it?

Anywhere, if its the right price! they will buy from private homes too as well specially if they are looking for a specific type to meet a clients requirements as well as sales, breeders, knacker yards, importing etc all depends on the dealer, not forgetting that not all 'horse dealers' are bad, its the bad ones that give them a bad name.

Some take problem horses off people, some dealers sort them out before selling, ....but some dont!

A Lot say they have come from Ireland when in fact they might not of been anyway near the Irish Sea, people seem to think because a horse has come from Ireland that its going to make a better horse....rubbish. Ireland do breed some lovely horses, but at the end of the day a horse a is a horse, its got four legs and neigh's, doesn't matter if it came from Scotland, Wales, Germany or where ever, its the breeding, confirmation, handling and schooling that makes a good horse.....sorry I've totally gone off subject....I'll shut up.

My seller-on horses all come from private homes. I usually buy the youngsters direct from their breeders and have them shipped to me. I keep them for a couple years, back them and then sell. The yearlings or slightly older horses all come from private homes where the owners don't quite know what they have; they have never found the horses potentials and I know I can.

In doing it this way, my horses are far more expensive than any of my competitors however I never have any trouble finding amazing homes for any of them because they are all soooo much better than any of my competitors horses.
