As of the beginning of March we've managed to find somewhere to put my little araby mare so we are looking for another horse, something mainly as a companion, so MUST stay on its own without frying a brain cell, only for an hour or so at a time 4 or 5 times a week, preferably up to weight (14 stone ish of balanced rider) Said horse will only be required to hack out once or twice a week. No schooling or jumping, nothing strenuous.
Happy hacker looking for a quiet life would be ideal. Nothing with a history of laminitus, although lammi prone is fine, as the little araby pony would be an ideal candidate for laminitus so is managed accordingly, mechanical unsoudness or arthritic, etc is fine. Must be able to live out 24/7. Summer turnout is resonably sheltered, but winter turnout is 13 acres with 4 others, surrounded by trees on all sides, so really sheltered. Its warmer there than in my house usually
There should be a field shelter up by next winter anyway. Winter turnout will be with the araby pony and 3 youngsters, who are playful but respectful of grown ups. It wouldnt be ideal though for something very aged or timid that couldnt politely tell the babies to bog off
They are very good at doing what grown up ponies tell them, but I strongly supsect would terrorise something a bit infirm
It really needs to be long term as we have a very stable and settled herd and we dont want to settle something in and then have it have to go back, although if it was just until autumn time it would be ok
I'm worried about taking something on and having it taken back at short notice, or taking something on and having it not be suitable for light hacking. If I'm going to have to pay for another one I really need something that can hack out with me and the araby pony otherwise I'd just chuck one of the youngsters out with the mare. I'm also, very selfishly, not prepared to pay hundreds of pounds for transport for something. I would take something unseen, but unless it was very local to Cleveland then I'd want the owner to pay the transport costs
I sound like a right selfish toad! but this really is a perfect home for something looking for a quiet life and I can provide refs etc from other people I've loaned/bought from.
So where do I start looking? Wanted ads might generate a response, but generally they generate a MASSIVE response from people with unsuitable horses
