Glad this worked out for you in terms of the small claims and having a backup plan for your horses.
Yard owners are bonkers. You'd have to be in order to be one. ? Couldn't pay me enough to be a YO. If I were, I'd be very, very, selective and probably hated by many.
I've seen similar situations before when someone wants to come to the yard, the YO wants them there (due to being friends, the person has money, a clique, and so on) and looks to bump someone else off of the yard to have space for the new person. They'll bump whoever they aren't attached to. Doesn't matter if it is a low drama pay on time client. They're short sighted and want this new person NOW. Sometimes it blows up in their face because the new person is cray or the relationship sours. Again, short sighted business plan.
I absolutely didn't care that they asked me to leave hence why I didn't argue with them and left within 24 hours despite being given 7 days. I'm quite fortunate as we have land already and also, my other horse was/ is on full livery. the bit that got me was the fact that they refused to refund me saying I broke the rules when I absolutely didnt. I have horrendous anxiety with rules so literally ask for permission for everything! I always do the right thing and treat others the way I would like to be treated. Had it been £50 I wouldn't so much have been bothered but it was a few hundred for something that was completely unjustified. I was tempted to pop it on the dodgy yards page on FB but couldn't be bothered with the drama in the end. I've always recommended them to people (and even checked in with YO during the pandemic to see how they were coping!) but I defo won't be now and if anyone asks me, I'll be sending them the messages and my experience.
