Where do you put your phone when hacking?

I usually hack out without a phone. My reasoning is that if I fall off and the phone is on me, it will break anyway and if it's on my horse, it's not much good to me if I fall off! Not a very sensible approach, I know, but this is my reasoning for not taking one with me. I only hack out from my home on familiar routes at the moment but we are beginning to get more adventurous and I am considering taking my phone with me. Where do others carry their phone when riding?

In my riding tights pocket or if I don’t have pockets, I have a round the neck strap that I can clip my phone too (you buy the strap and it comes with the ring that fits under a phone cover).

Having had to ring my own ambulance out hacking, I always make sure I have my phone with me and it has battery.

I never ride without a phone, I'm not even in the field without one just in case. I only wear leggings with a thigh pocket.

Not for phone but I have just got myself a leg bag for treats and other bits
my vape
. A cheaper amazon version of this one. The cheap dupe version has a leg strap that can't cope with these thick, thick thighs but even without it is still comfy to ride with! Doesn't bounce as much as my old waist-only treat bag.

I do this too - case clipped to one of those breakaway lanyards. It also means I can take photos and videos and be able to drop my phone safely if I suddenly need a second hand on the reins!

I can't imagine hacking without my phone. Now granted mine isn't massive but I've had to use it several times.

I have riding tights with a leg pocket, or in cooler weather I have a gilet with zipped pockets.

They are great aren’t they?
I do the same when Millie is being spooky and I need to be able to drop my phone at a moments notice without having to get it back in a pocket!

Mine was really cheap off Amazon and came with a couple of straps.

Yes me too! £2.99 well spent. I can't even comprehend the idea of riding out without a phone. It's one of the reasons I've stuck with an old iPhone SE rather than upgrading to something newer (and bigger) - I like having a little phone that I can put in a decent chunky case. I'm always dropping it (not from my horse - just in general life) and it's never broken.

I always ride with a phone but rarely use it. I have phone pockets or a small leather belt bag, or use gilet or coat pockets. I have stuck my phone down the leg of my boot too previously. I'd like to be able to call for help for me or a vet for the horse if needed. It's a total non-decision for me!!

I don’t take a phone out very often but if I do, I put it in my breeches phone pocket or a bum bag.
What would happen if you fell off or had an accident? I feel really bare without my phone somewhere!
Generally riding tights with a thigh pocket or if its not really warm I have a goof high viz gilet with zipped pockets

I use a Karrimor running bum bag if i don't have any pockets, they are quite small but fits my phone in nicely and aren't expensive to get second hand off ebay or vinted.

Thigh pocket. I have a wrist strap on it to minimise the risk of dropping it if I take it out. I also have a sturdy case and a screen protector. I landed directly on top of my phone once, and I was more damaged than it was.

Either riding tights pocket, running belt or gilet/coat pocket.

I'd never ride out without one, although we often don't get a signal but I try not you think about that too closely ....

A secure pocket or bum bag. I always take my phone and I have a tracking app shared with my husband so if I fall off and am lying unconscious somewhere he will be able to find me (when he eventually realises I'm missing).

I forgot to take my bum bag when I hired a farm ride recently and didnt have a pocket and being on my young horse I daren't go without a phone so I stuffed it down my boot. Not a great idea, my boot kept coming unzipped and I was lucky not to lose the phone. I'd also forgotten my helmet so I rode bare headed - somehow having a helmet seemed less important than having a phone!

You do (I think) always have an emergency signal (for 999 calls) which get through on a different network. So in the worst emergencies you'd have something.

ETA: just checked and apparently for 999 calls your phone will connect to any available network so you have a better chance. And apparently you can also text 999 which may also go through. But you must register first in order to do this - I will investigate. I didn't know that, how useful!

That is good to know :) It dawned on me once I typed my previous response that I also have a tracking app shared with my OH which works on GPS so he'll eventually notice my absence, I hope!

To save me doing a third edit, here I am again... Chat GPT tells me this, and it is probably something that we should all do if we hack alone (or even in company).

To register for emergency SMS, text "register" to 999. After sending the text, you'll receive a reply with instructions, including a confirmation to complete the registration. Following the instructions, typically replying with "yes", will register your phone. You will then receive a confirmation message indicating your registration is complete.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  1. 1. Send "register" to 999:
Open a new text message and type "register" without anything else, then send it to the emergency number 999.

  2. 2. Read the reply:
The emergency services will reply with a message outlining the registration process and what you need to do.

    • 3. Confirm registration:
Reply to the message with "yes" or follow the specific instructions provided in the reply message.
    • 4. Receive confirmation:
You will receive a final message confirming your registration or indicating if there was an issue.
    • 5. Test your registration:
To verify your registration, you can send "register" to 999 again. A reply confirming "already registered" indicates successful registration, according to the GAGB.

I always take my phone hacking because I hack alone and if either me or my pony was injured I’d need to phone someone!
I put it in the pocket of my riding tights or in a zipped pocket. I’d really like one of those thin wallets you wear round your waist under your clothes, like people use for cash on holiday. I did have one but who knows where it is 🤷

Coat pocket or shoved down inside of half chaps. Have been known to be looking all over for my phone then finding it stuffed down my leg

Leg pocket of riding tights was a revelation when I came back to riding as an adult!

I have a bum bag but this is only used when I want to take suncream and other things. I've sewed a pocket onto my uber cheap high Viz but my husband had since bought me a nice cycling one that has many pockets.

Can't imagine going out without a phone (how's does one Strava and gram 😜) but we did accidentally the other day and both me and my companion were annoyed because we couldn't take pics in the bluebells 😅 I do remember when I was a teen trying to jam my phone into my breeches pocket back when they were quite small. It still fell out often and I had to go back for it.

I'm pretty sure the emergency services can track your phone ISH even if it's broken, maybe not in a remote area???
