Mine has his head by my shoulder, I assume this is how he's been taught as he doesn't understand if you go by his shoulder, he'll either stop or turn in to you.

Where do yours lead from?

Loki will do the same if i try to lead from the shoulder. Now he will walk with his head level with my shoulder if I keep on at him, but if I dont concentrate he slides in behind me almost presses his head against my back and uses me as lead pony ... it's a work in progress :o

Depends which horse, who's with who, what's going on around :p
One or several of the following on any one trip.
1. Person at head.
2. Person at tummy area shouting some variation of stop/wait/slow down as other horse does option 3.
3. Person leadrope length in front shouting some variation of go/come on/hurry up as other horse does option 2.
4. Person in front of head getting shoved along by equine as other equine misbehaves doing option 3.
5. Person at shoulder.
6. Person running behind all horses as they take themselves to the yard as person is taking too long and it's tea time.

:p

Mine is the same. I do tend to stand next to him to lead with tack on etc, but he'd much more happilly walk a little behind. When mounting I have to walk infront of him to a mounting block so he is lined up, or he won't be close enough, then I have to either let go, or atleast try and release as much pressure as possible to try and get near the back of the saddle to mount or he'll turn round to look at me.

Err, depends on what we're doing and where we are.....

- from either side just in front of shoulder, fairly close or at a distance on parallel paths
- behind on a very narrow track
- in front and around to get through a gateway

With the sheltie, however, it's more like waterskiing if she's in a hurry to get somewhere:D

H is pretty bad at leading! When he first came he was very rude and bargy - as if he had never learnt how to lead nicely (not impossible!) - both to and from the field.

Nowadays, he just plods along in slow motion behind - you have to virtually drag him along!! I was thinking of clicker training him to walk smartly at my shoulder??

Depends, my horse generally walks with head by me.

However, i have a shoulder injury, so if its a horse i dont trust or know, i like them with me at their shoulder, as ive had horses barge into me from behind when their head is by me, and dislocate my shoulder. So depends on the horse!

Routinely by the shoulder. Wherever I ask them to though, me in front, by head, by shoulder, girth area, hindquarters or following behind. Why? Just for the heck of it really.

At my shoulder if I'm doing "proper" leading. (Such as in-hand out on the road/fields etc)
But just behind me, if I'm leading him from his pen, to the fence to be tacked up.

Where do yours lead from?

Shoulder like yours, on a loose rope, I teach them that way, I prefer it.

My lad leads from wherever I tell him - behind, head beside my shoulder, shoulder to shoulder, from the left or right, it makes no difference. He knows the commands behind me and beside me, he was taught them for TREC and usually will have no bother alternating between them.

With me at the shoulder. Mine has earnt the right to do as she pleases now she's older, so sometimes behind, infront, with or without me even using a leadrope, so sometimes several feet infront. I just make an effort to be proper infront of young daughter.

big girl slops along like dope on a rope:rolleyes: i actually prefer her there though as if she does suddenly decide she's going to head off like a tank if she has to come past me first i have half a chance of getting her head round to stop her, if i'm already at her shoulder then the it's game over:o new boy is learning to not speed walk everywhere:rolleyes: ginger boy has his head level with me as does bibble pony, little pony is a follower which is fine as it means daughter can lead him in safely:) might not be the BHS way but it works fine for us:p
