Where does everyone go to find 3 yr old 'in the rough' cobs for sale?

I bought a rising 2yo one of these...

2 years on he's a rising 4yo one of these (pic taken a few months ago, he's roughed off and disgusting at the moment)...

:D
He was a real bargain, I found his advert on preloved. He was from a local dealers yard, had from the sales as part of a group of youngsters they picked up. Love him to bits (even though he won't stop growing - he's grown from 14.2 to 16.2 in the time I've had him!)

great transformation, he's lovely.

Thanks :D
I can't take a huge amount of credit for it though, all he needed was a bit of half-decent grazing and some time :) he's a star

These are the pics from the day we found Shy out dog walking ;

A very happy day, i can tell you ! :)

OMG I always like your Shy horse and now there is more than one. Funny! I miss my cob. Drove past one today being ridden and just lovely.
Did you start Shy off yourself? A Shy fan definitely(sorry dont even know you). There are lots of black and white ones around Wisbech area tons of them.

Wow quite a change!

Kirkby Stephen auction mart. I hate the place, but a friend of mine bought a traditional coloured mare in the rough for £300, qualified it for HOYS and sold her for £30,000. Beats me as I thought she was mad to spend £300 in the first place, shows how little I know about cobs.:o

I would love to have bought all three of them, but what can you do ?

As I say, within 10 minutes driving from our house, we would pass 200 plus of these incredibly beautiful cobs.It is just so sad - without the time and effort, who knows what they could become ? They do all seem very small though - to make 13 -13.2hh. WHY ???

Traditional Show Cobs, I think they are called, in Lancashire (can't check as on phone).
They usually have just backed or unbroken for sale. I believe of their current stallions, 1 won at HOY's and the other was 4th, so good quality.

oh my he is one gorgeous boy!! :D

There's 'Eagle's cobs' - think they're in Yorkshire maybe - they have a page on Facebook. They have cheap young cobs and currently have a 19month skewbald to make 14.3, really chunky little tank! He's unhandled. £350 if memory serves. He really caught my eye as he was so chunky and well-marked. Worth a look but he may have been snapped up by now. Eagles Cobs are very good for young cobs if you're prepared to put the work in bringing them on. This one wouldn't be suitable for a novice as it was unhandled - can't recall what sex it is, perhaps a colt...

He's lovely but now sold.

It's funny, but I knew straight away the one I wanted - and he knew too - he came up and almost kissed our lab Stanley to make friends - they became the best of friends till Stan's death this summer, and Shy still insists on carrying sticks in his mouth while we're hacking to pretend he's a dog :o

I have to say it was pretty instant with me and Sailor! He stood for two hours with his head attached to my leg whilst we chatted! it's been pretty much the same ever since :D

NO - any mention of a dealer will get the thread pulled - see the sticky. Tbh, peeps have named dealers already, so this thread may not last. So silly, as peeps know the rules

Oh, well I genuinely didnt - I just thought it was any adverse publicity. From a selfish pov, got information from people who have contributed anyway now, even if the thread does go *poof*!

I didn't know that either, and I thought I'd read the rules. I think most of his are homebred so does that still make a seller a dealer?

Have you thought of adopting a rescued cob? There are several options if you look into horse rescue societies. It's not far to go to Blue X at Rolleston for a visit from Cheshire. My two rescued cobs are rising 2 and so loving ad appreciative of attention.

For "in the rough" ones, check Preloved. It's amazing the amount of cheap youngsters that come up. If you look past the winter scruff there's some really nice ones about aswell.

If you come up here (North Yorks/County Durham) you will drive past fields of hundreds of the poor things. So bloomin sad.

I found Shy while walking our dogs along a bridleway - he was in the field with some mates, I saw him, and that was it ! We had to go round the nearest town tracking down the owner.

Good luck :)

How lovely!

I got my little 14.1 from reading sales. Shame they don't do any of that kinda thing now as a lot of them went to really good homes. I always see cobs on preloved if that helps. Or you could ring about for dealers, someone must have them! Hope you find what your looking for! X

His cobs are beautiful, my friend just bought a beautiful chunky mare from him. Proper gypsy cobs, you cannot go wrong. He's a good bloke, has his young kids on em showing how trusty they are. Some are for driving/trotting (as gypsys do) but apparently he's the best. I can testify the mare is all she should be, not as I'd ever get my legs around her.

Hmmmmmm okay
