As the title really...

I've been looking for a while for a long-term/permanent loan horse. 15.2hh plus - any age, mare or gelding. Does not have to be a world beater, any fancy breed or even an easy ride... Anything considered from a cob to an ex-racehorse and everything inbetween!

Needs to be able to move yards - but every horse I've enquired about can't.

Any websites that you recommend?

Or any advice?

I'm in Devon if anyone has anything!

The reason I would never loan a horse out away from my yard is due to all the reports of thefts of horses. Owners struggling to get their own animals back, even with agreements in place.

I'm not saying that this is the reason you're unable to find a loan horse, but it has certainly stopped me from ever considering it. It's considered a 'civil' matter when someone STEALS your horse while having it on loan. Bureaucracy at it's worst.

I would only loan a horse out if it stayed where I could see it.

I know the 16.3hh that went on nfed last night.

BeBopTalulah - that is totally understandable. But I can give references from my vet, instructor or anyone else the owner wants a reference from. The owner can also come see the horse at anytime they want.

I will have a look on nfed now!!!

I am in no doubt that you are a genuine and experienced person :) I just could not contemplate loaning a horse out while there are so many loopholes in the law.

I was looking on NFED last night, there were a few wanted adverts which raised my eyebrows a little, one went along the lines of 'i want a horse to do this and this, but if you want it insured YOU have to pay for it, if you want it shod YOU have to pay for it, if you want a stable for it YOU have to cover the cost'
All my horses have been loans either through word of mouth, one wanted ad by me and one which was advertised. Write a professional sounding wanted ad, let all horsey fiolk you know your looking, and google search constantly. Good luck :)

Would you not consider an ex-racehorse free to good home rather than loan? I have heard about 2 this week, one now a hunter the other been out of racing 3 years and now a riding horse, just simply, no one buying. There seems to be far more horses given away than for loan these days. I took a free ex p2p'er, sound, nothing wrong with him.

I think it's not only the owners who can get ripped off. I know someone who loaned a horse, and part of the agreement was that the owner kept up the horse's vet insurance. The horse tried to jump a gate out of its field and was very badly injured. The vet started treatment, then it came to light that the owner had cancelled the insurance (I've no idea why).

The loaner had already run up a bill of over £1,000 in vet's fees which she now had to pay. She was nursing the horse back to health, but arrived at the yard one day to find the owner had come and taken the horse back. The yard owner, who knows both parties, had believed it was by mutual agreement.

I believe it's now in the hands of solicitors.

Earlier this year I replied to an ad about a horse for loan. The owner didn't want it to leave the yard, but that was okay, the yard was very nice and near where I live.

We went through the getting-to-know-you bit and both thought it through. Then we came up with an agreement and it was all going ahead. We made an appointment for me to come to the yard and finalize everything and start the loan effective immediately, for an initial 6 month trial.

I was so excited!

Two days before the appointment, I received an email saying the owner had changed her mind. A family friend had come forward and asked for the horse, and she'd rather it went to someone she knew well.

Fair enough, I suppose, but I was gutted. It completely put me off loaning and one month later I bought my own.

FionaM12 - that must have been quite upsetting at the time, but atleast it happened then and not after you started loaning the horse.

I need the horse to be able to move to my yard as I already have another horse so realisticalyl can't have two at different yards.

Pinklilly - I have e-mailed local reacehorse trainers asking i they have anything thats needs to be moved on. Any other ways I can find out about one?

It was when I realised it could have happened after I'd become emotionally involved with the horse that I decided loaning's not for me.

Sorry just seen this advert on Project Horses, thought it was bluntly honest about the mare
Trallwm Farm Animal Santuary is a Sanctuary in West Wales. We rehome horses on a loan contract throughout the UK
10 year 15h TX bought last september but have since found out that she is above owners skill set and level and are unable to ride her, she is being ridden by riding instructor and she is going well, She is well schooled and loves to hack. she is a bit of a baggage because if she suddenly decides she doesnt want to do something she does hops and little rears before doing what she was asked to so with a rider who gets that its all gob and that this mare has a hell of a lot to offer life could be perfect.
Please note that we do ask for references, contact should be made initially by telephone on 08712300873. Rehoming horses to the right home is incredibly important to us, and for that reason we do not respond to email enquiries. We rehome throughout the UK.
Please look on facebook for more of our horses looking for homes.

Might want to do a bit of searching on this online first given that it's an 0871 number they want you to call.

Loverly, I worked as a hunt groom and previously with p2p'ers, it just tends to be word of mouth. If you know anyone that works in racing or hunting ask them to keep their ears open for anything for you.

but where have all the good loanees gone? i have a lovely 16.2 mare for loan nr stratfod upon avon (but does have to stay at current yard) does everything no vices or quirks. good hunter (has field mastered 2 seasons). would event but no one has even enquired about her. she comes with all tack and rugs boots etc, lorry available, good yard with floodlight manege, hot wash, infra red lights and fabby hacking. sorry had 1 enquiry but they didnt want or feel they should contribute towards any costs.

I will spread the word to all my horsey friends that I'm after a loan horse or an ex-racer!! I have e-mailed some local trainers and have had some replies already but they are asking £1000+ for them :O

ofcourseyoucan - I think you should just allow me to loan her in Devon!!! On a serious note I think loaning has now got so much bad press that no one wants to loan or be a loanee.

I want to loan instead of buying because it means that I have all that extra cash spare for all the luxuries such as lessons, taking the horse on a spare of the moment trip to the beach and competing :)

To be honest as the Market is so bad at the moment we are considering loaning ours but the horror stories of horses going missing are a worry. Hopefully with references from vets, trainers, carriers etc and a contract these risks can be minimised.
