Where is the best place to advertise a horse for sale?

Would you say Horse and Hound, or Horsequest... or both?

Obviously a bit of a difference in price between them, so was trying to work out if it would be a good investment to go for H&H...

Also, does anyone know the cut off day to get in to H&H?

thanks :)

Depends on the horse you are selling as some are snapped up straight away and others remain for sale for months no matter where they are advertised. I think both H&H and HorseQuest are both quite successful but I am sure if someone was genuinely looking to buy a horse they would visit more than one website and the same people may look at both H&H and HorseQuest.

I advertised my last horse on horse quest and got 1 call and then advertised on horsemart when the horse quest period ran out and sold him within a week, plus had lots of calls after he was sold.

I think horse quest is generally good for higher value horses though from what I can tell so depends on what you're selling. It does drive me mad that you can't do a proper search on horse quest, you have to trawl through all the adsin each catagory, I think if you are selling in a popular catagory like all-rounder or dressage it is so difficult for your horse to stand out.

thanks... horse has already been on horsequest, under the all rounder and eventer categories but it didn't generate a lot of enquiries. In terms of the horse, looking at the £8k+ section and is also in the south west.

What is NFED?

If she doesn't sell then I will keep her, but want to make sure I've given it the best shot at actually selling her! Never sold a horse before so feel totally clueless!

HH,
The semi and professional riders I know (not that many i hasten to add) refuse to look on anything other than Horsequest and H&H as they believe (rightly or wrongly) that is where the horses of a type relevant to them are (no comment).
In my (very humble) opinion, having seen your completely gorgeous girl on a PM i would say she was definitely of that quality so strange no replies. In my search as a buyer i have found Horsedeals quite user friendly because of its search parameters although haven't actually been to see anything on there yet so not sure of quality (I am still working through all the lovely horses sent on PMs to my previous thread!).
Not sure if this gives you any colour or not but, for what it is worth, I would say that your description of her was great - you won't have any problems with wording the advert - you conveyed her character and skills so perfectly i felt like i knew her already and whats more but for the fact that my yard won't have mares i would have been straight over!

If I'm looking I use Horsemart for a slightly cheaper horse, Horsedeals and Horse and Hound for classier horses. The pony club website is very cheap and allows you to have two photos (about £20 for a month). I had hundreds of calls from that website - if the horse is a suitable PC horse... In the end it was H&H that sold mine..

TBH if you are looking at 8k plus and need to get rid fast then I would go for H&H, Horsequest and Horsemart - its a difficult market and the more exposure the better.
If you are in SW have you thought about western morning news - some good horses get sold in there

:):) thank you - very kind of you to say that! I'm still secretly hoping that I can find a way to keep her, but feel if I am going to sell her, then may as well give it a good try! Hope you manage to find your ideal horse - it's a shame that your yard doesn't take mares, but good luck anyway :o)

thanks - perhaps may look at the PC website, as we have purposely kept her away from Novice BE so that she is still eligible for grassroots.... could be quite suitable for a young gutsy/competitive rider :)

thanks - I will mention that to her rider. I'm not from the SW myself so don't know any of these things! :)

Have you thought about putting her with a dealer who deals only in quality competition horses?

TBH that is the route I would go if looking for a new horse as most give the option of returning and exchanging for another horse in a set period of time if you dont click

well, she is at a smallish event yard at the moment, and because I now live abroad, I want her to be there as I know and trust the rider, and know that she is being well cared for. I'm sure other places would look after her just as well, but guess I would rather keep her settled :)

I just cant decide where to advertise at the moment. I've tried HorseQuest so far, didnt realise the ad only ran for 1 month and they took it off (expensive!). I got 3 people phoning but nothing more. In the past Ive used Horse Deals & Horse Mart magazines but had absolutely nothing through those. So at the moment, Ive purely got mine on the odd free-to-advertise site. I dont mind paying for an advert but only if I get a decent result which I havent so far!

Have you tried Scottish and Northern equestrian MM? Or maybe the horses-sales Scot horse one?

Even novice PC teams use a BE90 course, so they need good horses! PC mothers spend a fortune nowadays! I teach at PC, and most of the kids have much better horses than me!

I am looking for a quality horse at the moment, I mainly look at HorseQuest and HorseDeals, but I do look at Horsemart, but I do think a nice horse can easily be lost in Horsemart.

But the adverts that catch my eye are the ones with clear photos and a video clip of the horse that shows him off.

A POA puts me off from calling.

Hope that helps a little.

thanks - useful to have the feedback. POA would put me off too - it's always nice to scan through and know what's accessible to you without having to make a call to find out roughly what they're looking for...

Perhaps I will have a look at HorseDeals...
