Was just reading a thread about yard stuff going 'walkies' and as I'm moving to a yard at wkend thought a lock up would be a good idea. Any recommendations? Just enough to keep things in like halter, ropes, grooming kit...

I bought mine from b and q. Its green, around £50/60 so not the cheapest but good quality and big enough to store everything i need to.
A friend bought a cheaper box and its so flimsy, you can lift either end of the lid with the middle padlocked

I agree with not buying the cheapest garden storage bins, we have one and it really is flimsy. The mid priced ones are so much better.
Not a cheap option, but we bought 2 large metal feed bins for all our bits and pieces. They were £79 each but are really strong and secure.

most people at my yard have them - either the big garden storage ones from argos or b&q. ours was about £50 and im sorry i didnt get the £80 one as it looks sturdy enough to sit on... so people do... but it is not! its pretty flimsy!!

if you wanted to steal something they are easy to open, but just to keep your stuff together with a padlock they work really well. its nice leaving everything there and knowing i wont be hunting for brushes etc, and its easy to keep everything tidy, i subdivided mine with smaller storage boxes inside (now i sound very sad!!)

Freegle/recycle an old chest freezer and padlock??
You could paint it, if you wanted to look a bit smarter :)

Second the chest freezer idea - we have 2 and they are fab for storage or feed. Also rodent proof, very sturdy, and will last years.

I recently bought a "Keter Glenwood" Storage Box from Tesco.com. I think it was around £60. It's 390 litre capacity which is pretty huge - you can get loads and loads of stuff into it - rugs, boots, bandages, grooming kit, riding hat etc etc!! It also has a metal reinforced bit that takes a padlock so you can lock the box up.

I got given a free metal filing cabinet about 10 yrs ago, it locks and i would not live without it, get friends and family to ask at work. They hold much more that you think :O)

At our yard we all have old wardrobes - the old fashioned solid kind. Just add a hasp and padlock. Also easy to fit saddle racks, bridle racks etc inside and mine has lots of lovely shelves and a drawer.

Try a charity shop like the British heart foundation or freecycle :-)

Try used office furniture companies for old filing cabinets and office cupboards, they are usually lockable, and like another poster said if they don't come with keys you can easily get some cut - tell them you aren't bothered about it looking pristeen, a few scratches and bumps isn't a problem if its just for the yard.
Also I believe the 'reader offers' section/website of the Daily Mail has a garden storage unit on sale for half price at the moment (or it did a few days ago, I remember seeing an advert) - these are big enough for a bale of hay and grooming kit and a few odds and ends.
Try your local furniture auction house for wardrobes etc these can go mega-cheap, or any local farm sales/auctions for storage units?

what about one of these : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ani-Mate-...oods_StableAccessories_SM&hash=item337702291a

bit more expensive, but from my experience very good value for money. I have one of their 3 compartment feed bins and one large single feed bin. They are excellent, completely rodent proof (come assembled) and even when water came up through our tack room floor during the floods recently and saturated the floor they didn't let any water in to spoil the feed :) very impressed. I remember delivery was quick as well. If you wanted something to hold your saddle they do tack lockers too.
