Have first proper stressage with mare next weekend. She's a kicker though and people always get too close in the warm up etc even when I ask them not to.

So I need to get a red ribbon for her tail. Does anyone know if you can buy these from saddlerys etc or whether I need to go to like a fabric shop and purchase a bit from there?

Also, numpty Q. I'm not plaiting, but I take it I would need to plait it into her tail? (I did say it was a numpty Q :D )

I used to use a length of thick red ribbon purcahsed from a fabric shop, knotted on to a plating band. Do a small plait at the top of the tail and fasten it off with the band/ ribbon.

I do the same as lillie07, little plait at the very top of the tail and then tie the ribbon in (secured it with a little elastic hairband designed for kiddies when we were going to be going fast and i was worried about it coming out!). I got my ribbon from a fabric shop :)

I'm another for electrical tape, I just cut a length off and wrap it fairly loosely around the whole tail at the top. Very easy and quick to do!

When I went hunting I went to local fabric shop, bought a metre of the widest red ribbon.

Tied a double "granny" knot straight around tail, then into a bow. I was well impressed it actually stayed in all day!

I went to the nearest school clothing place, our local one is called School Toggs I think, and bought a thick red hair scrunchie from there. Quick and easy to put on and off and re-usable/washable.

Do you have a Dunelm Mill near you? Or a John Lewis.

Otherwise try looking on yell.com for your local haberdashery.

Or even better buy a box of chocs from the supermarket that is already wrapped and has a red ribbon (yum!) :D

Lol thanks for all the suggestions guys. My mum bless her went to John Lewis today and bought me a massive reel of red ribbon so think ima tye it to a plaiting band and put a small plait in her tail and tye with it.

I just hope people take note, I competed her for first time back in November and it was only her 2nd ever comp (she's only young) she was in season and this girl kept ramming her stallion up her backside and she just kept planting, laying her ears flat back and bucking/ kicking out at him. It was so irritating too as she was warming up lovely. I lost my temper in the end and shouted at her and said you can see she kicks unless you want to get hurt keep back from her back end!

Grrr just total lack of manners and common sense. Plus I'd feel awful if a horse or person got kicked so hopefully a red ribbon will help encourage people to keep their distance!

Some people are just terrible. I have found SJ warm-ups the most dreadful with lack of manners and consideration to other horses & riders. Hope the red ribbon works I suspect some folks don't even know what a red or green ribbon stand for nowadays as they don't seem to respect it.

When I took the young one out for the first time, I wanted to put a red and a green in her tail. Only remembered the night before and ended up hunting with that tacky shiny xmas present string (the stuff you can curl with scissors!) as it was all we had. Did the job, and was a starting point of conversation ("why is your horse dressed as a xmas tree.... ").

Happy huting :D
