Hi all

I've been lucky enough to start sharing a lovely Irish Draught over the last few weeks, and we'd like to show next season.

I'm having a little bit of difficulty sourcing a tweed/hacking jacket. I'm new to showing and only have a navy jacket, I'm fairly sure he's a heavyweight hunter (17.3hh and 10 inches of bone) so needs a tweed! I'm finding online shopping a little unrewarding, there doesn't seem to be the same variety as you get with navy/black jackets! My top end budget is probably £150, any recommendations? any advice on colours/styles more than appreciated!

Photo because I think he's gorgeous!

Thanks everyone

I'm looking at second hand, there are some amazing bargains out there, particularly on facebook.

It's also worth giving tack and turnout a call. They are a second hand shop based near Chatsworth (I found them at the horse trials). If you call them with what you're looking for and size they'll have a rummage through their stock for you. I found them great to deal with (nothing in my size unfortunately - I need something with a green base to match my chestnut horse)

ETA, facebook has their address as Bradwell near Sheffield

Equetech do some nice tweed jackets for around that budget, if not you could pick up a really decent second hand one on ebay you probably won't need to even spend as much as that.

Hello,
Definitely look 2nd hand there's generally loads around.
Mines a Tagg jacket in moss and it always gets complimented on.
Also take a look at 'the showing exchange' and 'the arena exchange' on fb.
May also be worthwhile messaging them with what your after.

Buy the absolute best you can secondhand. The quality will shine through and hands down will look better than a cheaper new tweed.
eBay is a good hunting ground, there are two big showing selling pages on Facebook too which are:

Secondhand showing equipment
Show gear for sale or wanted

Equetech are lovely, also mears, and then Pretty Ponies, Alexander James etc...

I second looking on second hand fb sites..

Ebay, you can get some proper bargains, get the best quality you can. Look for names like Bernard Weatherill, Alexander James, Pretty ponies, Mrs Candy, Mears.

There is a lot of choice out there in new jackets, hundreds of different cloths etc but a decent new tweed will set you back at least £250.

Personaly I'd go for something with a green base as they tends to go with most colours of horse. For the hunter classes you don't want any in your face overchecks etc.
I'd avoid any blue based tweeds or any mustard based tweeds as they can make a grey look dirty.

Have a look in charity shops.. They often have tweed jackets. I used to wear a small mens Harris tweed that I picked up for £7... It looked far better than any of the equestrian ones.. If you're not too busty a mens jacket will fit fine.
