I have decided that next year i would like a fresh challenge and have thought about gettin a TB fresh from the race track. I know a few people who have brought ex racers (from private sellers) and there are cracking boys. I will either keep hold if it turns into a potential good horse or sell on and go in search for another.

Does anyone know how to go about this?

Thank you.

p.s I am in Bedfordshire area if that makes a difference, about 40 minutes from Newmarket Race Course.

When you're ready to take one on, then get in touch with us. We have trainers hand over TBs to us for re-homing, and providing you meet the criteria we could no doubt find you something suitable.

It is always worth a phone call to John Jenkins at Royston. He has sold a few slow racehorses which have been fab at other things.

PM me for his number if you are interested.

Try looking on the rehoming section of www.exracersclub.com, there are usually some horses straight out of training on there.

Other than that you could contact trainers directly

Good luck

Will have a look at home later though.
Thank you.

I bought a racer from the track last year (The horse in my Sig) and I got her straight from a racing yard. Maybe get in contact with a local stud near you? I would presume that they would have horses there that haven't quite made it. Thats how I got my mare.

We've always got ours direct from trainers yards but then we have one about 5 mins up the road and my sis has horses in training with them and my other sis used to work for them.

Our current TB ran in May this year and we got him in June. He settled in overnight!

He's the first horse in my sig

Just a word of advice - I've got 2 ex-racehorses, one flat and one National Hunt. If I were looking to get another, I'd go to a big racing yard, not a small one. Reason being that they often put the crap racehorses in a slightly smaller yard to one side waiting to be sold on. A smaller racing yard is often under pressure to race the horse no matter how good or bad so the ones for sale are often a) really crap rather than slightly crap b) a bit knackered from racing lots and therefore more prone to injury. Word of mouth is good, ask around about the trainer's rep before you go and don't believe everything they tell you. I'd also have a think about going to the Doncaster sales.

Tatt's big horses in training sale is coming up too at the end of the month. Agree with the bigger yard bias, I had two, one of whom had been at Martin Pipe's before going to small trainers and he was well and truly over raced but a lovely boy, just had lots of medical issues. Other one was from a yard I had worked in and I knew him from an unbroken yearling, he had never been pushed and was a darling, sold him on for a decent profit too!

This is something I'm interested in a couple of years too.

How much would you expect to pay for an OTT TB with no ridden training?

And how would you contact training yards? Literally just phone up and say you're looking for a ex-racer?

My youngster came from a trainer at 2 and was in the region of £500 with no Schooling to speak off....... She was backed and taught to run in straight lines...... nice raw material that is now at 5 doing XC, SJ(after a fashion) and very nice dressage tests
