Having sold my old showjumper, I have decided to buy my "dream horse" - a spotty youngster. I'm after something with the potential to be a good allrounder to do showjumping and dressage and possibly a little eventing.

So I've been trawling the internet and speaking to everyone I know looking a breeders and wondered if you helpful guys could recommend any? And possibly suggest what sort of breeding I should be looking for (as in should I go for knabstrupper or appaloosa or part bred? Any paticular stallions to look out for etc?) I won't say what I've found out already - want to hear what you guys have to say first.

Mikker is one of the stallions I've been looking at (and some of his offspring bred at colourthyme are also curly!), But noticed that most of them end up with very sparse manes and tails. Which is something I hate about spotties. But I thought it was just appaloosas, and that knabstruppers tended to have full manes and tails???

Can I ask as well why you chose Mikker?

He's big for a Knabby and conformation-wise he ticks a lot of boxes. I want to breed a well-built horse and he certainly has a foot in each corner! I fell in love with him the first time I saw the video of him free jumping at his ECHA grading. Wow! That is natural talent if ever I saw it. Powerful, easy, impressive. I think he scored 9.5 for jumping at his grading.

Also, you don't breed to a Knabby not hoping for interesting colouring. My mare is plain bay, so I needed a fewspot (homozygous for spots) and as far as I know, so far all his offspring have been loudly marked (mostly leopards and a few blankets) - so hedging my bets for good markings (all fewspots don't necessarily throw good colour every time and he seems to be consistent).

As for sparse mane and tail - it seems to be something that goes with the colouring, though I don't know why that would be - someone else might have an idea?
But my mare has plenty of mane and tail, so perhaps the foal will take after her. Generally speaking, my ISH mare is a very good sort, excellent jump, a hell of a shoulder and very good back end movement and I feel she and Mikker are pretty evenly matched & hoping for a baby that's just as nice ;)

Hi, I have Knabstruppers and love them. They have converted me into a spotty lover and loads of my friends have been converted too!!!

We mainly do dressage and our boys have been very successful, competing at advanced medium and they are still only 8 and 9 years old. They more than hold their own against the warmbloods.

They are incredibly versatile and have fantastic jumps too. My friend bought a Knabstrupper foal that we bred last year and plans to event her when she's older.

PM or e-mail me if you would like any more info on our horses.

The Capitall Stud in Cumbria have some lovely spotty youngsters for sale. They breed excellent appaloosas that are always winning in the showring and they have excellent temperaments. They use thoroughbreds on appaloosa mares so you will have the height that so many people on here seem to prefer. Their details are on the aphcuk.org website under Youngstock for sale, wide choice of colours.
There are also stallions at stud on there and there are also horses for sale and stallions at stud listed on the British Appaloosa Society website.
Hope you find what you are looking for - and thoroughly enjoy the 'spotty' you choose, keep us updated.

Hi Zoon
We breed Knabs and love the spotty horses. There are excellent spotted sporthorses to be found, both Appy & Knab. Many have as good a pedigree as solid counterparts.

I have a yearling filly for example, she moves beautifully. Her pedigree here http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?d=blacklaw+freya which has top SJs Mosegaarden Delight and Lucky Light who also sired Jane Bredin's Lucky Star. Manstein is in there, sire of in the UK Millenium. Raimondo, dam sire of Lando and his sire Ramiro. Knab sire's Apollon and Xanthos who are very well known respected stallions.

Another useful site http://www.knabstrupperlink.org.uk/ or http://spotties.com/
Or Google Appaloosas or Knabstruppers :)

hi i have to third Chamfron Stud and also may take a look at the Blacklaw Stud up in scotland, they appear to have some really lovely lovely spotty sporthorses.

all the best!

The Centaur Appaloosa Stud in Leicestershire may have something for you. They have some wonderful horses and will do their best to match you up with your dream horse.

Thanks Willow. This thread seems very old so the lady may have bought already what she wanted.

But here you go:

We have several for sale from weanling to coming 4 year old. Since I start to retire, the prices are not fixed just put into a range and there is a possibility to get a top horse for a nice price, by making a reasonable offer:

I was going to give you a link to Hillbrook Stud because I know they have a spotted colt out of a mare i used to own and she was by Augerman and was an advanced eventer and show jumped too, but their site seems to be down.

They have just joined faceyb tho and this is their page :)

But thanks anyway

Awwwww. My daughter (10) said: "Oh it looks like a Dalmatian, I want one!" :D

He is gorgeous. He presumably doesn't look like that any more? Any newer pics? How is he bred?

I would get hold of Ruth who owns Moorhey Tomohawk, there arent that many about by him but they are mega horses, not very tall often but ive ridden a few of his progeny and they are really good horses particularly if you can get one ruth started off,

I have three at the moment. Two out of Hanoverian mares with fantastic dressage lines (Weltmeyer, Donnerhall etc) and one out of an arab mare - one leopard, one laced blanket and one with freckles that is spotting out nicely. Halona Xubia, Halona Kuba & Halona Kneka - all from Knabstrupper and Warmblood lines. One by a Xhogun Middlesom, the other two by a son of Mikker so all should be very capable of jumping as well as having fantastic paces. - www.halonastud.co.uk

One due for 2011 out of my few spot Knabbie mare 'Elfi vom Birkenhof' by Alba, so will be Buckskin or Palomino spotty of some sort. Alba has been started by a professional showjumper and was showing great promise and has now started training for eventing.
