I would love to get some barding made up for my horse, but I think its going to be very expensive!

Does anyone know a trainee saddler student that might be interested in a relatively unusual project?

Just had another thought, try this

http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?

It's a worldwide website for leatherworkers, although most of them seem to be in the states but there are a few of us over here, try asking on there if anyone is interested. There's also medieval re enactment websites and forums and some of the members make their own gear, might be worth asking one forum I know of is

http://www.longshank.com/phpBB3/

Bit quiet on there though so I don't go on it very often, hope it helps,if you are going to be using leather for the barding and as you will need a good substance to the leather it is going to be fairly expensive, which is what you said, Oz :)

Why not ask at Ciren saddlers? As well as their fully qualified saddlers, they have one apprentice just finished, and one half way through her apprenticeship, another lady who is self funding through the courses (although is already a saddle fitter) and I am about to start down that road myself. Generally though trainee saddlers are broke (apprentice wage sucks!), so you would need to be able to at least cover the cost of the materials.

Yep probably my first port of call - they've already made me a holster, so are kind of used to unusual requests from me!!
