I,m having my nf gelding freezemarked on wednesday and i am unsure where to have him marked do i have him done under the saddle area or on the shoulder, do you get marked down in showing classes if on the shoulder. We have had a few horse thefts in our area and want it to stick out even when riding him i am just a happy hacker but would love to have a go at showing in the future.

Hi, my boys done under his saddle. It may be vain and silly but I really didnt want it permanently on show.
My feelings are that when rugged you wouldnt see it anyway if it was done elsewhere and in summer in the field it would be seen where ever it was. I can see your point about hacking out but to be honest if a thief wants a horse then they will pinch them whether freezemarked or not.

Forgot to mention he does already have a hot brand on his withers from when he was running on the forest but its not that clear when he has his winter coat. His hot brand just stands up against the lay of his coat but would be where a freezemark would go.

I was always advised against having freeze mark done under the saddle as at a sale/gypsy fair the seller cannot be made to remove the saddle if they don't want to. So if the mark is under the saddle the horse cannot be identified. I don't know if this is still correct but is what i was always told.
You will not get marked down in showing. Another place i have seen freeze marked is under the mane.

Your proberly right about not removing the saddle , i saw somthing like this happen at appleby but it was several years ago. I have also seen horses with the freezemark under the mane i am thinking that on the shoulder might be the best for my situation .

Do it on the shoulder - less time off work (if that is important to you) most importantly, it will be on view far more as the saddle will not cover whilst being ridden.

I would have it under the saddle. Livery had my old pony done on his shoulder & I wasn't happy. I think they might mark you down in showing.

My TB is hot branded and freezemarked on both shoulders (he's Australian). It doesn't look as bad as you'd think, and if it means you get to keep your horse - who cares anyway?
