I had mine done by Farmkey. They come out and do it, not the vet. Can't remember the cost tho...

Not sure about current prices, but it's not the vet that does it - it's a company like Farmkey - there are others.

years ago it was always done on their back just under the saddle - but you usually had to stop riding for a week. Nowadays they often do it on their shoulder and so this doesn't affect you riding them (obviously) - although I beleive showing people don't like to have the mark on the shoulder and have it under the saddle.

you have a choice where to have the mark done - unless you have a grey, or a coloured that is white under the saddle area. Farmkey will not mark grey horses under the saddle area, as they have to have a bald mark rather than a white hair mark in order for it to show up, and there is more chance of the saddle rubbing on a bald area.
My boy is done on his shoulder, even though I could have had him done under saddle, I wanted the mark to be visible, even when I'm riding him as a theft deterrent.
There is usually a discount for multiple horses marked at the same time, I think it cost me £43 as we had 5 done at once. You also have to pay for membership each year, but I got 5 years at the time of marking for a lot cheaper.
We had a cob, marked on the shoulder who went to Royal London last year, and we never had any comments, and he did very well, so I hope that the showing fraternity is coming round to the idea that marking is good!

Farmkey did mine for me and I was very impressed with the technician that came and did it, and I had some carrots and apples ready to occupy George and he didn't bat an eyelid. Re the cost if you are a BHS member you get a small discount.

Oooh yes! I forgot to say! They also said anyone a member of a riding club/ with NFU for insurance and BHS as Gorgeous George says you get £5 discount :)

Because I am with NFU and there are 4 of us freezemarking, I will only have to pay £38! :)

All mine have been done by Farmkey - and I also pay to keep them on the database. My present two were a little more expensive as I had personalised marks, but as they are staying for life, another £20 is nothing.

Mine have all been done under the saddle as I do showing and whilst the mark should never been penalised, it can distract the judge's eye if they are the sort that are very picky. I have given two weeks off until I am sure the area is not sore and again two weeks of doing ground work and having a bit of a holiday is no time in the great scheme of things.
