As title really, I have read alot of posts about race yards and horse sales around the country letting horses go, I have been looking for a horse for a while and have found nothing suitable. My aunty has offered to help me retrain/ break an ex race horse but have no idea where to get one local to us (south yorkshire but will travel).

If anyone can help,it is much welcomed

Thank you.

It's near York

I know nothing about it but found the website when I was searching.

Others I have found are nearer Cambridge/Newmarket.

Try a google search

Thanks for your replies. I dont know of any local race yards near here, just the bloodstock sales in Doncaster and I am not brave enough to go there :o.

My aunty has just moved up from Andover so she doesn't really know the area or have the contacts up here and I have just returned after a break from riding after starting a family so have lost all my contacts.

Big believer in its not what you know, but who you know ;)

Hey up Mrs - didn't realise you were on here! If you want to brave the sales I'd happily come with you :D

think theres a racing yard in doncaster. a friend of mine did racing at college and went there and shes also bought a few since from the yard since leaving that were no good for the track (very cheaply as well and they turned into lovely horses).
google doncaster racing college

Are you certain you want an ex-racer!!!??!! ;)

It's a bit farther afield from you but you probably want to google racing yards at middleham or middleham open week and give some of the trainers a call or email. It's the racing capital of the north, second only to newmarket in concentration of yards. Lovely place if you feel like making a weekend of it the White Swan is a lovely restaurant-pub-hotel.

There are a lot of jump yards in Middleham. Not sure if any of them rehome the way you are looking for, but there are about 15 yards in the area of varying sizes.

I know about the Doncaster Racing College, but wasn't aware that they sold horses, I will give them a ring in the morning.

I will search middleham and send a few emails off see where that brings me, wish me luck :)

Ooooh just a thought, try the rehoming of racehorses website, they may have some handpicked for rehoming horses or info on where to find them? They were hugely helpful when I "nearly" took on an ex-racer.

Good luck!! :D

My daughter actually emailed several race horse trainers in Newmarket (quite local to here) and she had quite a few offers of horses. She ended up with a lovely ex-racer for a very low price. I think she said she found the trainers in the Directory of the Turf or something like that. My well be worth emailing trainers in your area.

ah, found quite a few trainers local, sent a few e-mails off so fingers crossed. I missed out on a lovely gray mare this morning by half an hour! Why is finding a horse so frustrating:confused:

Mel Brittain has some in york horse sales every month! Ive had two from him wich with a a bit of patience are nice horses! He sells under the name of northgate lodge stud there.

Can I suggest you have a look on the Scot North ex racers website/forum. Although based in Scotland Lisa who runs the club is very involved in rehoming and knows a lot of people all over. She really knows her stuff and is fab at matching horses to people. She will probably know of a few horses looking for homes at present!!

Ferdy Murphy's yard is in North Yorkshire. I only dealt with his secretary, but she was honest and I got the one which was most suited to me. She wasn't cheap though....

You could try Debby Sanderson at Wiseton Hall Stables - near Bawtry, Doncaster - they sometimes have some or John Lacey at Retford. Or there is another yard at Carburton - just outside Worksop on the edge of Clumber Park - not sure who is training there now but Google may help you - Also Paul Dixon owns a lot of horses at Babworth just outside Retford - good luck - my son has four little ex flat racers which he has retrained as polo ponies and they are brilliant - I think the yards mentioned above are mixed yards - not just flat but not sure so you may need to check with them first
