Hi,

I don't post on the forum much but hope people might be able to give me some recomendations for where to send or who to have in for my pony.

I have a shade under 12hh stocky Dartmoor Pony who I have owned since a foal. She is now nearly 4 and I would like to have her profesionally (sp?) started.

The basics are all there and she is happy to be lunged and has been long reined a few times. Has good manners and is easy to handle. She has been walked out in traffic on her own and in company, had tack on and was very lightly backed at 3 by my then 4yr old daughter who rode her on lead rein in the paddock in walk. She was then turned away over winter and pretty much until now.

She has never been mounted from the ground and can get a bit worried if older/taller children sit on her. She can lack going forwards.

I am trying to find somewhere recomended that can get her re-backed and started so she can be ridden happily at walk, trot and canter on and off the lead rein in the school and on a hack. Maybe take her to a show too.

Does anyone know anyone or anywhere in essex or suffolk that would be willing to take her and would do a good job. Approx cost and duration of training needed if known would be good too.

Happy for it to be a confident child under pro adult guidance or a small adult. Happy for her to go away to a yard or for someone to come to my yard. Would consider full loaning for a up to two years if someone wanted to do it that way.

Suggestions welcome!

Hi
I have the same dilemma at the moment. There are quite a few people listed on the horse exchange, don't know whether they are any good though. If you do find anyone please let us know as I have 2 that need some work!
Good luck and let's hope someone else can recommend the right person for the job!

Hi

Contact Robbie or Angela Haag, they are highly recommended, have a look at the website http://www.hhfes.co.uk/
I know loads of horses that they have backed and horses which have gone to them as had problem and they have come out excellent.

Hope that helps

Thanks, I will try both of them.

I have also been in contact/left messages for the following but have no idea what they are like.

C R Hillyard, East Hanningfield

Harrisons show team, stowmarket

Bridgewood Stud (quite a long way away. Sounds knowledgable - in email contact. Cost £250 a month) Norfolk

I am also considering taking her to a yard near me which offers ridden livery. Haven't spoken to them yet though so don't know if it something they could/would do under that or if they have anyone small enough but they offer a 7 day assisted livery (would have to have assisted as can't afford to put both my horses there and they don't do DIY) where you can add a ridden option of 3 sessions a week for a total of £52 a week. Again have no idea of what the place is like or even if they would do it. That's Gates Equestrian at thorpe le soken. I think sending her away might be better though.

The hilliards have a tremendous record of producing ponies. I have known them for a long time, and they keep on bringing out winners. Whether they do breaking in livery is another matter, but they always seem to have small jockeys coming on.

Try Becky at www.ashenec.co.uk - Becky is great and her daughter may be light enough to do the riding (she is 15ish).

I had a look at the Ashen website but at £200 a week it is too expensive. really looking for somewhere between £50-£100 a week depending on ability etc. The only other option i have thought of is maybe keeping her at a 'normal livery yard' which offers ridden schooling say 3 times a week and also get my daughter (who she is intended for) to have lessons with her. One i have found would set me back £53 a week including the riding (but not lessons) for assisted 7 day livery. (they don't do DIY). Not sure really. I think this would also be a lot easier if she was 15.2hh lol.

Georgina Wilkes?

Do you have any contact details for her? I haven't heard of her what is she like?

Yes, my vet gave me their number as a recomendation. I have left a message on their answerphone but I haven't heard back yet. I don't know if it is something they would do or not.

I can find out for you. My friend has just had her horse there for a few weeks and he's gone from middle of the show line up, to now consistently winning red ones!

Kate Bacon who used to ride for Julie Barton is brilliant with the ponies she has hers at a private yard. I have known her years and would recommend her. She also rides the Hiliyard ponies and works there!!
