Mr P said tonight how much would a horse cost that I wanted. I have no idea. I know a lot in theory but I’d be open to many “bad bits”
I would like 15-16hh just really a nice hacking horse. Can be a complete arse on the ground if it pleases.
doesn’t need to load, jump, move amazingly. Happy to sedate to clip. Happy/ish for stable vices, its nice not to have them but not the be all and end all.
id like to be able to give dry hay in the field so a mild dust allergy is ok
i just want a small sound horse to plod round the farm, have bit if a canter on, but doesn’t have to be anything super special. Could even be not great in traffic really but nice if I can do roads. Don’t like mega hairy, happy for a TB. Can live in/out
will get every dat turnout, pref a better doer to fit with his buddies (needs to be a he)

I bought a lovely TB straight out of the field at his training yard for £1800 and he ticks all of your boxes. If you have some ability and can handle the odd racehorse moment, I'd go that way. Mine was just on Preloved, but there's always nice ones on the ROR site. Happy to PM you the name of the trainer if you want- she often has them available, they all hack out on the roads routinely and are done really nicely.

Names would be good, thank you.
I do have a lot of contacts in racing but was kind of thinking a bit more established really.
There is a half possibility maybe coming up on one yard.
It sounds silly but i do almost prefer the idea of unknown and that’s been my more successful ex racer, one I had no idea about previously, rather than yeah it’s great but I remember the day it p’d off the end of tha gallop or whatever 😳
Also happy to rehab a leg over winter etc

Just had a Quick Look on Horsequest and there are a few ex racehorses for reasonable prices and I also looked on family friends and there is a coloured boy who sounds like he would suit what you want to do

Have a look on the BTRC, we got our ex racer from there, when it was the TRC. They will be been retrained. On a loan system where if for what ever reason you can no longer look after the horse they return to the charity

He sounds exactly what she wants, but I really like Holly, despite her being a mare! Is that bog burn on the near hind, or does she just need a bath? Why am I looking? I'm not getting another!

The Preloved website is another site that takes horse adverts. Put 'mare for sale' or 'gelding for sale' in the search bar, and try and read between the lines. I'm fairly sure they are not all fabulous, perfect, to die for etc., and you know to be wary of the picture of the rising three year old flying over a jump assuring you it has done a bit of everything! Having said that, the prices can be more reasonable than some other sites.

Didn't you just describe a retired polo pony?

My friend has a couple of retired polo ponies and they are lovely and would fit your needs perfectly! There is a Facebook group for retired polo ponies looking for new homes, definitely worth considering.

One on there at the moment sounds ideal -

If I’m looking at the same one, 15.2 7 yr old? He is pretty nice actually. is that not too cheap for what sound essentially a potentially decent horse?

As for polo ponies… I have no idea. I know nothing about polo or polo ponies, maybe other than the fact my friend has one and it’s constantly unsound and pulls shoes almost weekly 😳 she also insists on riding him one handed like a cowbuy because that’s all it understands (Obviously I’m sure you can ride them normally, at least after time)
He, being my only experience puts me off slightly.

Oh no 🙈. My friend as two that she does all normal activities with, hacking, fun rides, hunter trials etc and no cowboy riding required 😆

This ^ Many ex racers would fit the bill, not all TB's are lunatics or poor doers and often suit a lifestyle you describe. Can be bought cheaply because of the stigma they have! I had one years ago, super fun hacking horse, useless at jumping though But I didn't jump so no issues he was just to slow for racing, he was a freebie straight off the track.

Yeah I know, I’m not ruling them out either. I’ve had 5, still have one but he’s retired, aged 12 after spending £££££ on him, and there’s my hesitation. So much seems to go wrong with them.

Ok, just read bits of this to Mr P and he thinks I misunderstood the brief 😂
He asked what it would cost to have a nice horse I want, not what’s the cheapest thing I can get away with.
Now I don’t think he’s meaning £0000s as such but it doesn’t have to be problematic.
So I’d change slightly to one that loads and I can take for lessons etc, maybe no allergies
Also good in traffic because as he pointed out we won’t be here for ever and I may not always be lucky enough to have off road/quiet hacking.
