I've never heard a bad review over Plods N Cobs.. they're based in Manchester. Might be worth contacting them?

The 16h plus will be the problem, plenty at 14 -15h but the bigger ones are rare. I can do you one but you will need a parachute and valium !

There is an advert on Preloved for a big coloured horse 'Tally Ho Charlie' the same yard had various heavies. Based in Worcestershire.

We called about hundreds of horses and viewed 15 unsuitable ones before finding OH's 16hh HW cob. I think you just have to call all the decent dealers and keep searching all the private ads until you strike lucky. It took us 4 months but he's been worth his weight in gold the last 10 years he's been with us.

Have you tried contacting local hunts? They'll know all your local dealers and it's a good time to talk to hunt dealers. Their horses have all finished for the season and will have had a "spring break"- so don't jump straight on 'cos it might not have been ridden for a month or more! I have a lot of time for established hunt dealers 'cos their reputation is all (usually). There will be some great teenagers out there right now.

In my experience age and history is as important (or perhaps more) as shape. I've ridden ex-pointers and ex-eventers that, once upon a time, were the top of the competitive tree and would have scared me witless. A couple of years away from their professional career they can be outstanding, easy and safe riding horses.

On the other hand my OH's "super safe" big old cob gelding can be very strong indeed when he gets his mind to it. They have big strong necks and nobody wants to pick a fight with 600kg of cob!

You'd do worse than to try Vicky Yoxall (based in Cheshire). Has a small number of horses at any given time and tend to be the solid Irish types and some decent cobs. I bought my mare from her and whilst she's 5 and green (which was made completely clear to me before i viewed) she's as safe as houses (IDx). Vicky is on fbook if you search for her.

There was a Shirexcob on DragonDriving when I skimmed through there yesterday. I can't remember where in the country and obviously you would have to remember 'buyer beware' but I find that is the same wherever you see the ad - and I've had some decent horses from folks who advertise on there.
If you can wait until the autumn many RS weed out their larger horses before the winter.

Second both Vicky Yoxall and Cobsnplods. CnP supply a lot of riding schools and also do a no questions asked two week trial for a hundred pounds, if they are the ones I think they are. Sold a difficult to handle on the ground horse to a friend of mine and told her all about it before she viewed.
