Lots of very lovely well bred, bloody type event/competition horses being advertised but what about the more low key, non flashy safe fun horses to do a bit of low level BD/SJ and mainly hack and enjoy? Where do you look for these types? Any dealer recommendations, particularly in the South? Thanks

Have a friend selling this. I doubt it will get advertised publicly as will go via word of mouth on FB.

Make one yourself! Get a nice youngster, horse or pony, and educate him or her as you would like them to be. I am only a very amateur rider/horseman but I have done 2 really successfully over the years. One was a NF mare and the other a very mixed breed but quality tobiano 14.3. I have to admit that one in between these was a bit of a failure but i think the problem with her was that she was badly started and I just couldn't get to the bottom of some of her problems. Start from scratch and within a year or so you can be popping out to events.

I ended up doing this. I bought BH just over a year ago, recently backed and ready to start doing stuff at 4 years old. I deliberately bought one more 'common' than I would have chosen as an older horse. He was featured as a very laid-back horse, more woah than go.

Yes, I would have preferred a more established horse but, TBH, I have really enjoyed bringing him on. I have taken things more slowly than strictly necessary as I am older and wouldn't bounce. I do hack and enjoy him, here is a little photo of our first beach trip!

As you can see, I chose a chunk!

For an honestly described youngster, I recommend Olivia Chamberlin. She is in Ireland but it is quite cheap to visit.

Try Julia Martin at Kings Hill Equestrian in Bolney Sussex. Near to Hickstead. Julia has a website and a Facebook page.

So difficult to find.

The genuine ones tend to go via word of mouth like hotcakes.

The advertised ones are often badly trained / lame / failed competition horses that don’t convert to low level well.

If the advertised ones don’t fall into above category then they are spendy and not all purchasers appreciate the value.

There is something to be said to making your own if you can find the right raw material and are happy to spend out on help during the journey.
